Do they work?

Or is it just because every throw in that occurs close to the parameters of the penalty area gets launched (usually not very well) into the box that we are seeing more long throw ins.

Burnley scored a goal last week from a throw in, but it was throwing it short and then putting a quick ball in for a goal. is there a metric for that?

I understand marginal gains, i understand working on as much as you can to gain an advantage......but apart from Bretnford and Koyode's long throw which gets fired in, do any others actually benefit from it? Or is it just we see a few more because the percentage of long throws being taken has sky rocketed?

Every long throw also takes about 40 seconds to do, at least 5 or 6 long throws per team (6 minutes of the game being wasted on long throws) and you also have the tomfoolery with towels etc (which you saw the spurs sub yesterday trying to put towels down on there side of the pitch

All depends on the opposition. I remember Tim Howard and our back line flapping when Rory Delap did it to us years ago at Stoke.

Play to your strengths. Few can keep-ball like City do.
Slot can’t figure out how to defend long throws or break down teams who use a low block.

This era has created such a massive disparity in wealth between teams where the rich can stockpile every decent footballer in the league. The rest just have to try and make it like a 3rd round cup tie to try and compete.
We’re not able to go to City or Liverpool and play them at their own game, so we have to find something which gives us any advantage.

They work if they come in flat and with pace on them. If they're simply looped into the box from on high, PL defenders will clear them all day long.

It’s playing the percentages isn’t it …. If you’ve got a tall lad who’s gonna win a header and strikers who anticipate that then why wouldn’t you launch the ball into the box ?

It was quite the novelty when Tommy Hutchison used to do it for Chelsea in the late 60s/early 70s.

I never saw it again until Rory Delap did it for Stoke thirty odd years later.

My personal take on it is that it is becoming more effective, but as a part of the wider focus now placed on set-piece routines.

What is the percentage of goals per long throw?
Is it creating more chances?
Were there more open play goals without the long throw?

According to some pundits and managers they contravene the Geneva Convention, which makes me broadly in favour. That said, how that Spurs lad didn’t get booked for time-wasting on Sunday I’ll never know.

A goalkeeper can get booked and penalised for an 8 sec delay, but on Sunday, Spurs were taking over 30 secs for some throw ins. Dont know who comes up with these ideas 'to improve and speed up the game' but they need to look at this.
