The club can tell them to print whatever. Who cares. The fact is until everton get a modern stadium and or investment they can not compete on a regular basis in the premier league. So what do people want the echo to say? everton are world beaters going to sign rooney, ronaldo and messi?
You're missing the whole point of pretty much everything.
The Echo has a clear bias towards LFC. LFC are 'struggling' because they finished 6th and haven't won a trophy in 3 years. Major questions are being asked of the owners and manager. This is despite massive ground redevelopment currently happening, under the owners watch.
EFC meanwhile have won nothing for 20 years, have a board that doesn't invest in the club, have a board that is tiny, absentee and anonymous, mired in murky less than transparent dealings. They have also been responsible for 2, potentially 3, collapsed stadium moves and 1 collapsed Goodison redevelopment. As a business the club underperforms compared to even minor mid table rivals like Stoke.
The Echo does not question any of this. It does not put pressure or demands on anyone. It is interested in only in preserving its own perks. It has none of the same fears of upsetting the apple cart when it comes to their beloved LFC.
