Our record against them must be up there for worst-ever run against a local rival. I know Atletico went years not beating Real but recently they’ve improved. It’s staggering how bad we are in these fixtures. Embarrassing doesn’t cover it.

I remember that record and feeling so sorry for them every year. We haven't just matched it, we've eclipsed it by far.

They consigned it to history in some style too, winning the Copa Del Rey at the Bernabeu.

Why is everyone so optiistic? Being optimistic doesnt give us a better chance for the game, we have no control over what happens. The stats are stark and really highlight why some are pessimistic and rightly so....
And being pessimistic doesnt enhance our chances either. Every winning or losing run comes to an end (Fulham just beat us at goodison for the first time in 27 years)
If the players went out with a positive attitude every time we played them then I'm sure we wouldn't be on this run.
We've not won for this long because of the mentality, worse teams than us over the past 20 years have gone there and won.

Without optimism, what's the point?

Deep down, I think most fans will have their worries and doubts, but for the derby most will rightly or wrongly follow their heart and at least hope we can win.

I remember being in the pub before Analfield last year - the dire FA Cup game - and looking at their XI and thinking, "This is a big banana skin."

On the outside, people were trying to be confident (our best chance... we can do this), but the sizeable numbers we took were subdued and felt worried too.

My worry is that if we're so full of negativity what will the players be like? We need to break this voodoo and turning up with no optimism won't help.

Possibly Barcelona/Espanol could be worse?

I think the mentality thing works both ways. They are up for it like a cup final against us, this together with the fact they are just a better team has done us over. The likes of Fulham can blag a win because Liverpool aren't as motivated.

It's true. It's kin pathetic and disgusting. Martinez, Silva, Koeman, Allardyce and Ancelotti haven't been able to defeat them. Only Moyes has done so since 1999. Absolutely atrocious and the club should hang its head to have allowed such a mentality to remain over this time when Liverpool have truly had some terrible players and we've had so many chances to beat them when they've been at their lowest since the 80s.

Stats! We've been breaking them all season! Fulham just creamed us at home for the first time in fricking yonks! Christ you're negative!

Got that sick feeling in my stomach now but come 5.20 the blue blood will be pumping and the heart rate increases. If ever there was a time to end the hoodoo it’s tonight. UTFT

What will I be doing you ask ? Sitting in my Hafina top (tradition) , biting my fingernails and shoiting myself, and living every second off it,, that's a derby.

Normally not confident then the closer it gets to kick off I build in confidence, only to get inevitably dashed 90 mins later.

Don't fancy us at all this time, think we'll give them a helping hand turning their season round.

Maybe its a positive sign that I'm not confident this time?

If we win I'm claiming responsibility.
