Premier League target Lewis Holtby has moved closer to an English move after the midfielder told Schalke 04 that he will be leaving the club in June.
The Gelsenkirchen outfit had hoped that he would follow Klaas-Jan Huntelaar's lead and sign a contract extentsion with the Königsblauen but sporting director Horst Heldt today announced that the midfielder is set for a bosman move.
Heldt said: "We wished that Lewis and his future beyond this season would be with FC Schalke 04. But like Klaas-Jan, he has now made a personal decision and we respect that.
"We are sure that he will give everything up to the last day of the season we can continue to make a contribution to the sporting success of our team."
Holtby's decision will have put long-term admirers Arsenal and Liverpool on red alert, but another option for the half-English midfielder could be Everton, the club his father introduced him to and that he has supported since he was a boy.
It is, however, possible that Holtby may look elsewhere for a move, following his recent criticism of the English league.
The German international – who could have played for England as his father came from Merseyside – said: “The break in the Bundesliga gives everyone the chance to have a rest.
“We also get the chance to go back and spend time with our families over Christmas, which is important.
“I know how *important football is to English fans over the Christmas break, but it must take its toll on the players.
“For the rest of us it doesn’t make too much sense *because when players are tired and playing so *regularly you do pick up little niggles and *injuries.â€
