Do you seriously think our squad is good enough to get top 6? Because you're deluded if you do. We've got around the 8th or 9th best team in the league so I'd be happy if we finished there, especially given that the league has improved drastically since last year.

Expectations will grow massively next year after 2 more windows.

I dunno.

First up, I cannot see us being involved in much activity at the higher end of the market in January.

And as the popular consensus, as expressed by your good self and others, is that we are only climbing two or three league positions at most, I fail to see how we are going to be any more attractive to star players next summer than we were in the one just gone.

IMO Koeman needs to justify his huge salary now and get this current squad playing better than they have been.

After all, twelve short months ago the cry round these parts was that we had the "best squad in thirty years".

I believe this current squad is capable of better and the manager needs to find a way to utilise it to its optimum potential.

If he does that there is no reason we cannot finish in at least the position we now occupy.

Then we become a more attractive proposition to players and at last we might see us flex a bit of muscle in the market.

Really? So you'd be happy at finishing, say, 9th? Roberto was rightly given the bullet for 2 11th placed finishes. We get a highly rated manager who comes in & improves the defence. He spends 25m on a winger to go with one if the best strikers in the Prem and you'd be happy finishing just above mid table.
It usually takes a season to make a team yours. The previous manager brought Lukaku in and raised our league position from 6th to 5th,one place. If by the seasons end Koeman gets us to 10th or higher and looking more solid, that would be satisfactory. As long as we are moving in the right direction. The second season will be the time to fully judge him

Yeah, but a good manager can also bring the best out of what he has got, whether that be through tactics, motivation, man management or whatever. There's absolutely no way I would be happy with 10th. No way, and judging by some of the posts on here pre season, id be very surprised if anyone else would be. A new manager generally improves results. We have one of the most highly regarded upcoming managers in the game, working with a team that under performed massively for the last 2 seasons. A team that everyone says should have been finishing higher. He's already improved the defence and made us hard to heat, he's spent (blew!) 25m on Bolassie to compliment what we already had attacking wise. Add to this a 60m striker up top. For me anything lower than 7th and I would be asking questions of our manager. Big time

God himself can't get anything good out of Tom Cleverley, Niasse, Kone and Enner Valencia mate.

What you're saying is true, but at the same time - the holes in the team are still exactly the same holes from last year. We got Bolasie, so now we have actual options out wide, which is great; and also Gana, and he was desperately needed. What else? Did we get a good/decent/solid backup striker for the £60m one upfront? Nope, in fact now we have 2 deadbeats instead of one (Kone being the only one of the 3 who isn't utter turd... and it's Kone FFS!). And Lukaku is notorious with slumps, as is Barkley, as is Mirallas/Del. What if any of them has an off-day? Exactly, our next best options are Kone and Valencia for strikers, and Tom Cleverley for literally every hole in midfield. Ace, that, defo worth chasing 5th.

January will dictate where we have to finish. Until then, we're doing the best we can with somewhat limited resources, though I'm not saying this as a criticism towards Koeman, it wasn't his fault we Everton'd the transfer window again.

Thing is with Kone, Cleverley, niasse, they mightn't have to be called upon. Koeman knew the shortfalls in the squad when he took over and he decided to shell out on Bolassie when there was probably other areas that should have taken priority.
You say there's holes in the team, but it's basically the same team that got us upto 5th 3 years ago with a much inferior manager. A look at that season will tell you what a new manager can achieve with a fresh outlook. We have a talented team, ok the depth isn't the best but we have a 1st 11 that can give the best teams a game, as has been proven. With a bit of luck on the injury front, why can't we be aiming for top 5 or 6. I just find the defeatist attitude here a bit deflating, especially after all the optimism of pre season or even last month.

Ronny will fix our problems, when he leaves we will be a vastly better club than when he joined, to be honest, its almost impossible to do a worse job than our last manager did.

Im not saying he will win a trophy or even finish in the "glory" placings, but he will perform his remit, which is to get us European football.

I'm with you...but perhaps a little softer. I'm not convinced he will...but I could be swayed. He's got time with me too, even if I remained underwhelmed with his appointment.

I agree he will leave us in a better position than when he took over, but not by much, and not by the expectations our club should have. That's just me though. He won't win anything with us either.

Well, I feel better after reading that! Isn't it good to hear from somebody that knows whats going on.

If anyone thinks we're not good enough to break into the top 6 then we've got the wrong Manager. By common opinion, we under performed last season and had a fraud as manager who couldn't set up a defence. This season, if the Manager is as good as everyone thinks, surely we should at least be challenging for top 5 or 6. That's what I expect anyway.

What? No, that's terrible logic. The previous manager was sacked for taking us from 5th, to 11th, to 13th (at time of sacking). So he was sacked for turning us from a top 5 team into a bottom half team. We've had 1 transfer window, we still have most of the squad from the previous season so therefore we've only improved very slightly. He was never going to come in, click his fingers, and magically gave us back challenging for top 4 again. It's a rebuilding job he's been tasked with.

I suppose he was sacked for raising expectation for that 5th placed finish in his 1st season, if he'd done it the other way round everything would have been good. You tend to to get teams performing for a short while under a new manager though......................
If Martinez could get that team to 5th, I don't see the problem in thinking Koeman could do something similar with what he's got
