Did anyone watch Beckhams return to AC Milan vs Genoa? No this is not a Beckham thread from some newbie Yank! Hear me out. Did anyone notice they ran a 4-2-1-3? Yes a 4-2-1-3! Interesting yeah?

Ok, now the fun part. I preface everything I'm about to write by saying I am not completely in touch with the capabilities of Everton's players nor am I a tactician by any definition of the word. However Fellaini is quickly turning into a beast. He needs stability now as a DM and I think he will get it. Rodwell is a future star and already a quality DM, he needs time though, but the sky is the limit with this kid. Also Rodwell is a best buy young star in Fifa 10! :P I doubt I need to write much more for everyone to understand where I am going with this.

Yes, I want to see Rodwell and Fellaini on the pitch destroying anyone who dares inter their zone! What a defense! I mean, Fellaini's hair alone is worth like 10 fear points. Neville as a full back. On the wings we have guys with plenty of fuel in the tank for tracking back. When Donovan is fully fit he is fully capable of tracking back with smart pressure. Beyond this is where it gets a tad murky for me. Obviously Cahill and Pienaar are a part of this. Who plays the CAM/CF role here etc etc.

It's a big gap between the fullbacks and the Wingers in this system. However is also a defensive system at the same time lol. I don't know. Images of Fellaini and Rodwell busting people up made me chuckle. Whatcha all think? hehe

I just had a kind of shredded, uncooked potato with some sort of asian vinegar with shallots on it, mixed in with some chicken fried rice and it absolutely blew my mind.

True story.

I like food as well. Are you saying AC Milan can pull this off but Everton cant or are you just intellectually limited? Perhaps just adverse to fun.

The problem is,where does Cahill play?

We have a somewhat flexible squad so formation is not so much an issue:

A: First choice; B: Reserve choice(s)

---------------HOWARD-----------------

Defence:
A. Neville/Coleman - Jagielka-Heitinga - Baines
B. Hibbert-Yobo-(Neville/Hibbert/Rodwell)-Distin-Duffy-Neville
(perm 4 from 10 capable of playing in defence + Gosling as emergency RB)

Midfield:
A. Donovan/Billy - Arteta-Fellaini-Pienaar
B from Osman-Rodwell-Gosling (Neville, Cahill)
(perm 4 from 10)

A. Cahill - Saha
B. Yak-Vaughan-Anichebe (Donovan/Fellaini)
(perm 2 from 7)

Therefore: 4-4-2

(you can add Baxter and Wallace if you wish, Neill is assumed to have buggered off for the Turkish Lira and Jo just doesn't count!)

If 4-2-1-3 (madness frankly given our inability to retain the ball!) could push Donovan into a more forward role with 2 regular strikers.

He doesnt! :p

Felli and Rodwell holding

Any three from Pienaar, Bily, Arteta, Donovan, Cahill, Osman in the attacking midfield roles.

One from Yak, Saha, Vaughan up front.

Simples.
It can't be this way, at least if we are comparing our chances to play like this to Milan.
Yes, they were and they are using 2 holding players, but they also have Pirlo - when Milan is without the ball he is playing higher on the pitch than Gattuso and Ambrosini, but when they are in possession he is their deep lying playmaker, and Gattuso and especially Ambrosini instead play higher. So if we would like to use this system Cahill, Donovan, Pienaar and Billy are out of question, of course Arteta is a great pick, Osman would be decent too.
And despites impressive win over very unimpressive Juventus, it's not a right system for Beckham.

PS. Damm, I didn't understand properly that your list of attacking midfielders is for 3 positions, not only the central one. But still it doesn't change my point about Pirlo - he is the reason why this system works for Milan, so for us only Arteta and Osman can play in the middle, and they have to play deep. And there's absolutely no place for Cahill here, unless Arteta/Osman will play alongside only one holding player (Milan play Pirlo along Gattuso or Ambrosini, when Seedorf is playing as AM).

It's unlikely to be a rigid system anyway. Arteta could fill the deep lying play maker role when we have the ball, allowing Fellaini to support the attacks more. When we don't have the ball Fellaini and Rodwell/Neville provide the shield in front of the back four.

Another option of course, should we keep him long enough, is for Rodwell to develop into that ball playing midfielder.

I think we will end in more traditional system - it will be one of Arteta or Osman (he surprised me defensively in recent games) as deep lying playmaker, one of Fellaini/Rodwell/Heitinga as defensive midfielder and one of Cahill/Fellaini as support striker; when Arteta will be back I also think we will be able to play 4-4-2 more aften, but it will never be our nr1 tactical system.

This!
It's a system invented by Ancelotti and perfected by rijkaard. I've been saying this is the way we should be playing for ages!
