Do you not think he's had exactly that, what with the injuries to Pienaar and Mirallas?
He's never got a proper run of games. He'll start one and then be benched for the next few, even with the injuries we've had. Mainly because Martinez insists on playing at least one player out of position on the wing e.g. Osman, Barkley, Eto'o

It's not hate. It's realism.

I'm not sure it is, mate.

I agree that he's not exactly a "world class" winger but he definitely has skill and pace... His work rate is good... Hopefully Roberto doesn't see him as a long term first teamer, but as things are, I don't see why he shouldn't play.

I'd love us to get a good, young winger but I've no idea how likely that is so....... UP THE GEADS!!!

This is the one area that we've struggled in I think this season. Pienaar would probably be the first choice, but he's barely been fit. McGeady has been frustrating in the extreme, and Atsu has really failed to provide the same kind of impact Del did last year.

Hopefully Pienaar can put a run of games together as he's probably still first choice, despite not being near his best.

We've got wingers. Play them. And keep playing them.

Martinez is infuriating with this now. Wingers all fit and he was playing stop gaps out wide. It's an indictment of him alone that he hasn't played either McGeady or Atsu. He brought them in. If I was one of those two I'd be in to him looking for a transfer out / return to Chelsea.

Whilst you have a point re Atsu, McGeady has played in sixteen of the twenty-two first team matches this season. Twelve starts, and four substitute appearances. He's only NOT been in the matchday squad for the West Ham game and the dead rubber against Krasnodar.

Mirallas has only appeared twelve times, missing eight games due to injury; Pienaar has appeared just nine times in all competitions, again partially due to injury.

So in summary, you're not quite in touch with reality.

Not true. He's started five of the six EL games; six starts and four more appearances off the bench in 15 league games

6 starts in 15 in a team crying out for width. Not good enough. And neither has been Martinez's in-game handling of the situation: often subbing a player doing well and looking to build up some confidence and consistency.

Martinez is at fault here. He had all that time at Wigan and then Everton to determine how he'd use McGeady if he got him. To pursue someone so long then not put any faith in them is poor leadership.

I think it all depends on the opposition we are playing and what is required from a game. It isn't as simple as choosing one name to fit all options.

If Pienaar is fit, he is probably the most rational and balanced option to partner Kevin on the wing.

What he lacks in pace, he makes up for in experience, passing, ball control and his relationship with Baines. He can unlock defences!

However, Steven now appears significantly limited by injury. So, it can easily be alternated with McGeady who still offers width and some skills.

Oviedo could also sit in that position, but it's not ideal - I think he should be challenging Baines for his natural position.

Only in the odd circumstances where it is really required (through injury or tactics), should Barkley et al be put out there. It's not ideal.

Personally, I think we miss Delboy. He wasn't the complete or perfect player by any stretch of the imagination, but his pace was effective.

Hopefully Martinez invests some money in this area in the summer... it's another one of our weakness.

Pienaar these days: I'd put him on with 20 minutes to go to hold onto a lead. He really just goes round in circles with no forward momentum. He can screen a ball as well as any player I've seen, and that's almost his sole worth these days - denying possession to the opposition.

In a perfect world within the realms of possibility, I'd have either Shaqiri, firmino, volland or deluflu. Or all four Christmas morning

Pienaar is finished, can barely shield a ball and his technical ability is wilting and as a winger he has no pace. McGeady just isn't a player for a club with European aspirations.

He hasn't shone as of late I will agree. Yet, I hope (maybe it is sentiment...) this is simply due to lack of games and consistency through injury.

If he could find or rebuild build his relationship with Baines, then he may still add worth to our left. He's still probably one of our best passers.

However, as you mentioned his forward momentum is somewhat lacking. If we're playing counter attacking football then he should be benched.
