One of the reasons I went was on the off chance it was a "I was there moment", little did i know it was going to be a "I was there but not one else turned up" moment
Back to the Future; Like going back to the early 70's where the announced attendance was a standing joke...in fact we used to stay on for the other scores AND the 'official attendance' just to hear it for the laughsJust been speaking to a steward in the alehouse and he said there was nowhere near 17000 there as the club include in the official gate fans who entered the auto cup scheme in their season ticket and most didn't turn up,there was more like 11,000 there, which if true was our lowest ever crowd for a European game at Goodison, to go with our heaviest home defeats in Europe. Happy times indeed.....
A classic illustration of this was the day Big Bob got his 30th league goal against Chelsea. Not a seat to be had. A jam-packed terracing. capacity at the time c 50,000. Official attendance 39,000!Back to the Future; Like going back to the early 70's where the announced attendance was a standing joke...in fact we used to stay on for the other scores AND the 'official attendance' just to hear it for the laughs
You'd look around the ground (capacity 55K or so) and think 3/4s full, call it 39, 40, 41ish K, then wait for it
...and today's attendance was - pause - 33,496 (yeah right) thank you for your support...sometimes (like now) it was the only thing worth raising a smile about.
Where's the gate money Bill?A classic illustration of this was the day Big Bob got his 30th league goal against Chelsea. Not a seat to be had. A jam-packed terracing. capacity at the time c 50,000. Official attendance 39,000!
I also remember playing a first home game of the season against City in the early 80s I think. There'd been a cock up over ticketing and people were actually having to sit in the aisles because of double booking. Again, terracing absolutely chocker. Official attendance c 30,000!
The worst of any english side in history apparentlyIf there was only 11,000 there in total then I think we may have been outnumbered, it looked like Atalanta had about 6,000 fans there!
Really poor anyway. The Europa league has just made me sad this year, surely our worst European outing ever
Back in the very old days we had a turnstile scandal where the money was being pocketed, and the club then rooted it out - see it hard to fiddle computerised tickets now ?Not the first time the club has fiddled the gate.
Allegedly

It was a weekly joke wasn't it?Guess the gate, then guess what they would stick up on the old Park End ScoreboardlolBack to the Future; Like going back to the early 70's where the announced attendance was a standing joke...in fact we used to stay on for the other scores AND the 'official attendance' just to hear it for the laughs

you get a credit for buying the ticket ,whether you go or not.I was thinking about this, if they are taking the money I think they should still give out the credit
