Last Film You Watched

Agreed. It's almost like everything 'has been done' so they struggle for originality and even when they find something it's poorly executed.

That could actually be said for quite a few movie genres at the moment.
Wasnt there some sort of dispute in Hollywood a while back with script writers?
Tv has certainly outshine the movie makers for the last couple of years

Think that was TV too if memory serves me.

But yeah TV series' seem to be outshining movies at the moment.
I suppose its easier with tv series though more time to pad out characters and story lines, compare 8 hours of a series to a couple of hours on the big screen

Me Before You

It was the Mrs' choice.

A weepy* that wasn't as bad as I expected it to be.

7/10

*She blubbed. I never.

the missus put Little Children on last night, also a relationshippy-weepy type thing with Kate Winslet. We groaned at the obvious romantic setup of the first 20 minutes or so, turned it off. Thankfully she's not into the cheesy guff, tho' maybe it got better.

Which films have you had that lump in yer throat moist eyes effect? The very final scene of Oldboy for me.

just whipped out the handy imdb list, these are good-to-great 21st-century sci-fi from more leftfield which you might not have seen:

chronicle
edge of tomorrow
errors of the human body
the fourth kind
moon
the man from earth
save the green planet
under the skin
pandorum
primer
the forgotten
apollo 18

and some a bit weaker but still worth a watch:

lucy
europa report
oblivion
sunshine
dark skies
devil's pass
the bay

Apart from Primer and Moon, the ones from that first list that I have seen are mostly poor. I liked Edge of Tomorrow, but it didn't really feel like the original concept it set itself up to be, and was mostly a by-the-numbers sci fi.

I loved Europa Report and Sunshine, couldn't possibly classify them as weak. I watched Dark Skies under a friend's recommendation but it was a bit wooden. Have you seen Coherence?

aye, i was most disappointed in Europa Report as i love me hard sci-fi, still interesting enough. Sunshine was a bit too emo but still watchable. Agree on Edge of Tomorrow & Dark Skies being mere fluff, tho' i probably found them more entertaining than you.

if you haven't already check out Errors of the Human Body and Man From Earth. Unusual, understated and leave a lasting impression.

Have you seen Coherence?

no, but just read a brief outline and it sounds up my street...on the watchlist it goes!

It's almost like everything is angling to be a blockbuster and very few risks are being taken as a result. Each year they're refining a very specific formula that they know will get bums on seats and are getting more reluctant to deviate from it. Even the look and sound of films is becoming a wash, the tone and "colour" of films are almost uniform where directors used to use visual palettes creatively.

That being said, TV shows are better than they have ever been, we've existed in a generation that has witnessed Breaking Bad, The Wire, Battlestar Galactica, Stranger Things, Game of Thrones, House of Cards etc. and long may it continue.

dunno about that: Wes Anderson, PT Anderson, Jonathan Glazer and Nicolas Refn are auteurs with very much their own tone & colour. They don't make blockbusters but their films are quite well known.

Aye, that's very true. There's plenty of good films out there like, don't get me wrong. I suppose I'm railing against the bigger budget movies saturating cinemas, the ones that have the budget and scope to explore huge ideas and invariably fail. The Force Awakens for example.

Force Awakens was disappointing, as are almost all modern blockbusters.

I'm not railing against blockbusters themselves, rather just how rotten they are. the best blockbusters from the 90's were entertaining, thrilling and charming: Independence Day, The Rock, Jurassic Park, Deep Impact, Fifth Element, Titanic, Forrest Gump, Matrix, Speed, Saving Private Ryan etc

And look at the variety of those films!

Something happened to the formula which has constricted it to this horrible limited mess. Problem is the takings are bigger than ever so it's not changing soon. Superheros and franchises have killed the blockbuster as a critical medium.
