Could have been a lot worse though imo when u look at the managers we've had. Benitez and Dyche I could confidently say were not motivating the players.

But Coleman hasn't been a magic bullet. He just trotted out what any captain would have been expected to. This idea that he is in some way irreplaceable in the dressing room is a myth. He's a very cheap back up, nothing more.

I'm not implacably opposed to Seamus. Heck, he's a great ambassador for my country - and the testimonials he receives from others prove that. I just want to see us move into a new era with a new culture, because, with the best will in the world, Seamus is a leftover from the Kenwrightism that has corroded this club and eaten it from within over the last 30 years. So, when I hear "Seamus gets the club" and all that soft talk, I fear it is the same snake oil that Blue Bill spent his life successfully duping a majority with.

Fully understand that given our recent history. This summer definitely needs to clearly mark a start of a new era for the club, but I do think it would be unwise to think Seamus has nothing to offer this rebuild even if he doesn't play a minute of football.

I think you're right. Another club wouldn't have our baggage because none of our peer clubs have suffered in the way we have - at the hands of "one of our own" for so long.

I am almost - almost - irrational on the Kenwright era at this point. We need a full purge. A dekenwrightisation of the club. Only then will I think we can build a new culture. It's the main reason I can stomach losing Goodison. Kenwright's ghost roams those old corridors and his snake oil seeps from the walls humming "Good times" by Chic while sweet nothings about "charity", "Little Miss Dynamite" and "What a manager!" echo in the wind.

In his interviews with the press yes, he tends to just give by the numbers answers and say what he's supposed to say.

That's 1% of the job though and the more important day to day stuff we don't get to see. I'll take the word of players and staff of the club as to how important he is. And if moyes thinks its worth keeping him around for this season I'll trust his judgement on that as well.

I suppose, in the end, I am viscerally allergic to people saying Seamus is great for the club, great with people, etc., when one would have to say that nobody was a better public representative of Everton Football Club than Bill Kenwright.

I mean that sincerely. Kenwright was the worst thing EVER to happen our club - an utter charlatan that soaked the club for his own egotistical and financial ends - but he was an absolute master of PR for over 20 years of his tenure. He was in his element at funerals or at Wembley - the odd time we'd get there - or at memorials. Nobody spoke more emotionally and sentimentally about the club - but it was all snake oil. He talked the talk and walked very differently.

So, I am allergic to hearing we are keeping Kenwright-era symbols for reasons other than performance on the pitch. It may be slightly unfair to Seamus - who, unlike Blue Bill, seems a genuinely sincere person. But it's how this long-suffering fan feels and I don't think that nagging distrust is going to change while relics of Kenwright's time maintain influence at the club. I'm perhaps unfair - but it's visceral.

It's just typical Moyes,he shoehorned Neville into the side when he was way past it. Just another season of going out on the pitch to get a point first and foremost.
Players should only be in the squad based on what they can do on the pitch. Not sentiment

I think you’re right and it’s not just the word of Moyes it’s successive managers all saying the same things.

I remember Carlo Ancelotti saying this;

“I don’t think we have to talk about the [Coleman’s] contract. The contract that Seamus has with the Club and this team is forever. It doesn’t mean one-year long or two years long. Seamus’ contract with Everton is forever.”

"He is an example for all the others of how you need to be: the attitude, the spirit - every day," said Ancelotti.

You see, this is the vague, nebulous bit that I am concerned about. What specifically does he bring?

It's so undefined as to be in the eye of the beholder.

I’ve said this before but it’s not.. 99.9% of us do not know Seamus. The media and the club do and his team mates always speak highly of him, you saw how Frank spoke about him in the changes after the Palace game.

I trust the judgment of highly paid cub official (sometimes) over a load of fellers with unlimited data and access to grandoldteam tbh.

I don’t think its vague at all personally. We're building an entire new squad this summer and he's been the club captain for well over a decade. He's responsible for helping players bed in, learn the culture of the club and making sure that the whole squad have their heads screwed on and are moving in the right direction.

As exciting as this summer is with all the potential incomings, it could also go badly badly wrong bringing in so many players at once. Give the armband to Jarrad next season, this year in my opinion Coleman is still needed as a leader in the dressing room.
