2018/19 Kurt Zouma

I've had a look at Chelsea's options at centre back and they are nowhere near as sparse as people make out.

In terms of senior centre halves they have;
Rudiger, Christensen, Luiz and Azpilcueta.

Younger players
Ampadu, James & Tomori

Returning loanees
Kalas (26) & Hector (26).

So in truth they have anywhere from 7 to 9 options available for them before Zouma. At a push even Lewis Baker could play in there. Thats not to say Zouma is behind all of the above, I'd make him probably 5th choice. However some level of pragmatism will surely kick in. Luiz & Rudiger will be first choice, while Christensen will fill in should they be injured and increasingly Azpilicueta will. How many games are they anticipating Zouma being involved in? I imagine Tomori will always want game time and may get some under Lampard. So you have a choice really, it's say £30 + million, or keep Zouma around in the case of 3 or 4 injuries.

I suspect they keep one of Kalas or Hector as a back up rather than loaning them out (possibly both stay) as emergency cover and take the £30+ million for Zouma rather than having him as an emergency cover option.

They have Jake Clarke-Salter as well he was on loan at Vitesse Arnhem last season, he partnered Tomori at CB for The England Under 21’s this summer, albeit not too successfully, he was probably the better of the two though, Tomori was responsible for a couple of errors that lead to goals. Trevor Chalobah is another very highly rated CB that they will have to make a decision on as well.

Had no idea Chelsea had that many centre backs on their books!

And on the subject of Chelsea, bearing in mind that Lampard is apparently a shoe in, taking a while for him and whoever to actually pitch up and see what he has available isnt it?

Yes I think the idea that they don't have any centre backs is just untrue. They have about 10 who could do a job in the PL.

Kalas still plays for Chelsea! He must be their longest servant!

Haha, I Googled him and the first report does say longest serving player. But seems he's on the move. He's been there 9 years and came on once in the league cup and came on in stoppage time in the CL haha

They have 3 or 4 young players they can push up (which Lampard will want) 3 frontline experienced ones and Azpilucueta (who will likely become a CB now). They then also have 2-3 journeymen types who can fulfil the role of emergency cover. I would imagine he is viewed similar to say a Kalas. He might come in and play a bit, but in essence he's not needed. The difference is they don't get 30 million for Kalas.

That can't be right, because they've got about 4 million overseas players returning from loans, not just one.
I’m assuming most of those players aren’t close to the first team, I just know the registration for all European squads is the same

Higuain’s loan has ended so he’ll go back but they have Batshuari returning, they might need to keep him as they only have Giroud to play CF other than Tammy Abraham. Bakayoko is the other higher profile loan they have returning.

Kalas is going to Bristol City and virtually no chance of Hector being anywhere near Chelsea’s first team squad, especially ahead of PL experienced title winner Zouma. Also think Azpi is too small to be a CB in a back 4, which depending on how much Lampard rates Zouma pushes him up to their 3rd/4th choice (at least)

The biggest thing in our favour is Zouma himself - he can't go back to Chelsea and sit on the bench if he wants to keep his place in the French team. Lampard, as a former player himself, will be receptive to that and so the question is simple: is Zouma going to be first choice or not? If not then you sell him for the good of the player

They have that kid Miazga out on loan with Reading who is due back. They highly rate him and he's now a full international with the US.

There is no chance whatsoever Zouma is anywhere near 3rd or 4th choice mate. Rudiger, Luiz and Christenses are all ahead of him. It's hard to say Azpilucueta playing much more at right back for legs and will likely move inside. He is behind them.

After that you have returning loanees/young players such as Tomori, Baker and even Chalobolah who may all be in front of him given Lampards priorities.

I don't think it's a case of Hector being ahead of Zouma (or Kalas for that matter) more just if they require a lad to be 5th choice and provide a bit of experience over say the younger players, I suspect they will use one of those lads over Zouma. That's essentially who he is in competition with at Chelsea. They won't get 30 million for the other 2 though. If they are concerned over numbers, they will cancel a loan deal before they cancel a big money transfer.

I actually think Lampard will move up Tomori and possibly the lad playing next to him at under 21's.

Think Frank will ask Uncle Jose for his thoughts on Zouma, and then decide to stick with him
