And what was the profitability of Newcastle's commercial operations? They're quoting gross revenues not profits.

That was sort of what I was getting at. Not a lot of point getting a £10m 5 year deal if you dont make money on it I guess.

But it would appear they could do better nevertheless.

Given Mike Ashley's day time job, if they can't shift shirts and kit, who can?

Newcastle below. Try and tell me we are NOT underperforming.

Newcastle United reveal record £19m profit for 2013-14

The Tyneside club, who are currently 12th in the English top-flight, say a growth in their commercial revenue has helped increase after-tax profit to £18.7m from £9.9m in 2013

Newcastle United set to announce bigger profits than top Premier League and Champions League clubs - 27 Feb 2015
Despite lying 11th in the Premier League, the club could have made £50 million in the past financial year

Newcastle United announce an £18.7million profit but still owe Mike Ashley £129million - March 2015

Commercial revenue increased by 49.7% to £25.6m

“Most significantly, the Club reported strong commercial revenue growth delivering £25.6million in 2014, up from £17.1million in 2013.

Are we giving away value? We don’t think so. Remember this is a retail deal and retail isn’t booming. It’s not TV; it’s not sponsorship; it’s a cut-throat sector trying to keep pace with ever-changing buying habits and expectations.

Everton = £12.7 million same period (2014)

Deloitte (Feb 2015): Commercial revenue of £12.7m (€15.2m) is the lowest in the Money League, and is less than half that of the next lowest club, Newcastle United.

Absolutely unbelievable to have come out with this guff Everton. Unbelievable!!!!!!!!

@davek

....our objective should be to make as much money as possible in this space. We have heard many examples of supporters not being able to purchase merchandise which seems basically inefficient to me. If supply doesn't meet demand then it's not good enough. There seems to be little drive, innovation or strategy.

Nil Satis is the clubs motto, perhaps our administrators need to always challenge commercial activity against this benchmark.

Mate, I know you are very enthusiastic but you are jumping at conclusions based on headline figures without really examining them in any great detail.

There's nothing in the quote above nor the links you have provided to clearly define what the profits of Newcastle United from commercial activities are. Don't get me wrong I'm not defending Everton per se, I'm just saying you are jumping to conclusions without all the facts on front of you.

Roughly look at how net (after tax) profit compares to commercial revenue.

They're roughly equal maybe some taken off in costs.

In my mind that indicates all virtually all the costs of Newcastle are covered by their gates/tv money etc.

All their profit is coming from commercial revenue.

This shows how under performing we are.

This 'Retail isn't booming' BS is just that. BS.

Basically he could of summarised it in one sentence: We were losing money and are too incompetent to know how to improve it so outsourced it for a small guaranteed sum every season.

Could be. Or. We are a football club, and have let someone know what they are doing do it for us.

Just for fun.

One thing I wouuld say is that Newcastle who control their own distribution are in a much stronger position to negotiate commercial terms and with sponsors.

However they have the skill set within their club to do so - it is after all Mike Ashley's business. But I think if you looked more closely at his business practices you might want to question whether you'd want this type of business man running your club. Not many Newcastle fans do.

I agree. I don't want him running our club.

But I do look at the commercial revenue performance and think its scandalous that Everton are languishing behind.

Commercial Director and staff are not being paid BUTTONS at Everton.

They need to get out their and earn their keep.

Or get out.
