Funny how a creative player gets pulled up for not running and tackling but a Gueye/Schneiderlin type won't get berated for not whipping dangerous crosses in or beating 2 men and then belting one in the top corner

That's because regardless of ability any player should put a shift in.

Some people just dont like skilful players like this. They'd rather have a plodder who puts in 90 minutes of dull but honest endeavour than a player who can turn it on and have a telling impact on a game a few times per match....sometimes to spectacular effect, other times to no avail because chances aren't taken.

Koeman wouldn't be giving him a chance even in these friendlies, if he didn't think the kid could play.

See Niasse.

Thing is Dave, in the modern game even the creative players need to combine it with hard work. That's what separates players who end up at top clubs with ones that end up at the likes of west ham and stoke and until recently us.

Ereckson, sigurdsson - even ozil who gets lambasted for being lazy actually cover a huge amount of ground in games as well.

Dowell has huge talent, but he does need to find a consistent level of his game rather than coasting and occasionally producing something special.

Is rather have a player who produces special moments and works hard as well. Rather than giving a player a pass on effort.

The lads only 19, hopefully he learns that talent isn't enough without endeavour.

Counterpoise between the two, Le Tissier if he didn't smoke etc

Just being that type of player makes some people automatically think they offer absolutely nothing else. It's a blind spot. And just as in an actual blind spot the brain 'paints in' the part of the vision field that isn't actually there to them.

That's what some footy fans do who favour effort over skill: they 'paint in' the lack of effort.

I have to say I think Dowells work off the ball is perfectly fine, though not exactly voracious. He's been a schooled well by Usworth. It's more his languid style and strange propensity to not be getting enough touches on the ball that make him seem lazy which, I think, is incorrect. He definitely needs to get involved more with play though, especially considering what he can do with the ball when he has it.

Hope we loan him out to a decent standard, championship maybe, to a team where he will play every game. Unlike Galloway last season.

I'd like to see Dowell get some time behind the striker. Stack the wings with the usual grafters and give him a bit of leeway. Gana and Schneiderlin are more than capable of handling the tackling duties and such.
