He was going to and Dowell got hurt. Martinez rated the boy big time.

Kieran Dowell has both the ability and mental strength to handle a Premier League debut tomorrow, says Roberto Martinez.

The 18-year-old Academy product looks set to be named in the squad for Everton’s game at home to Bournemouth at Goodison.

Dowell has been in scintillating form of late and bagged a brilliant hat-trick for the Blues’ under-21s against Leicester City’s second string on Monday.

The playmaker made his senior bow in last season’s Europa League dead rubber against Krasnodar but is being lined up for his Premier League debut this weekend.

Dowell was part of the first-team squad in pre-season but an ankle injury curtailed his progression.

But Martinez says the timing is now right for his top flight introduction.

“When you’ve got some young players of the quality of Kieran you only feel that it is making sure the time is right to step into the first-team.

“He started pre-season really, really well.

“The two games he was involved he looked up to speed for the Premier League but he then picked up a nasty injury and it is now that he is picking up the level again so I have no worries whatsoever with Kieran.

“It is just making sure it is the right moment and the right opportunity to give him that Premier League debut that he’s earned.”

Dowell has regularly trained with the first-team this season and Martinez says the way he adapted to those sessions was also important.

“As well (the right time), it is how he reacts towards being around the first team,” the Blues boss added.

“Kieran, the biggest strength he’s got is his mental strength, it is really, really good.

“Technically, we all know that left foot is very special but I just feel that the players we have now in the system is not just young players that they appear, they are young players that have been given a really strong programme and everyone that comes into the first-team is because they are ready to play and ready to help the first-team.

“Kieran is one of them as well as Matty Pennington, Tom Davies, Callum Connolly, they have already been involved in the first-team and the others who we feel are very close.”
Martinez also rated Mori, Cleverley, Alcaraz, McGeady, Kone, Niasse and many others.

Saying Martinez rated someone is like saying a music album is good because it has been recommended by Mel C.

naa it's ok... I think he'd be a good international manager with a team of stars...just rate Koeman higher, so if he decides Dowell isn't ready I'd take his word for it though I hope he does get a shot...to say he's not paying attention is...well, not paying attention really

A team requires inspiration as well as perspiration. Let's hope this balance is one that Koeman now recognises and he isn't still just a manager that demands hard running for 90 minutes and not much else.

there are numerous current players(who played under both) saying they've improved and are 'inspired' by him...many more who've signed over other teams because they are 'inspired' by his vision. He's giving Dowell a chance and sees him everyday, more than you or I. RM's particular brand of excessive positivity is probably great for a group of players who meet intermittently for internationals. Koeman 'attention' to detail is suited to the long haul. Fitness, set pieces, criticism of things that could be better takes attention. To say he's not paying attention if he doesn't feel Dowell is ready for first team this season after watching him pre season is simply a negative bias. Dowell has something in the locker, so has Deulofeu...doesn't necessarily translate to the tactical plan

I was answering the lad's question about why Martinez didn't play him if he rated him. I simply pointed out that he did, but Dowell's ankle injury slowed his progress.

Personally I'll take Unsworths opinion for it. He's said he's ready & played him when he got a chance. The only true way to find out is to play him.

what if Koeman also thinks he's not physically ready?

To be fair, Koeman hasn't actually said any such thing. A lot of people are putting thoughts into his mind.

The truth is, he sent him on against Twente with the the group of players that will most likely form the core of the starters. That spoke volumes to me. At the very least it means he wants to evaluate him playing with the boys who we know will be in there (Rooney, Klaasen, Gana, Schneids, etc).

There were nothing games at home Vs the likes of Bournemouth and he left him on the bench for 90 minutes (when fit)

Thinking about it, if el Coco did that, then get him in.

I agree...doing well so far in pre season anyway...can't see any reason so far myself not to see more of him this season so hopefully Koeman sees nothing to convince him otherwise
