Got to be better than Cleverly - what a most stupid sub that was v Burnley by Koeman I did not see him we went from being in command to conceding a goal our midfield just disintegrated - a total waste of space we did not rid out our deadwood of around 6 players!

I've seen enough of Dowell to say with some assurance he has what it takes. The way he takes a pass and knows precisely where it's going next cant be taught. He's a natural. He wont get the chance for first team football from Koeman though. He'll be looking to buy in players and Dowell will wilt and be lost to us.

Don't know where you're getting this assumption from tbh. The likes of Ward-Prowse and Targett got plenty of game time under him at Southampton.

That point about what can't be taught is why I suspect Barkley will never be a truly great number 10.

The whole not playing youngsters thing does make me laugh.

I have a hard time believing that any football manager at any level steadfastly refuses to play young players if they are good enough to be in the team. Why would they do that? It's their job on the line at the end of the day.

Le Tissier?

No pressure then...
I only said his style reminds me of Le Tissier, which it does. He has this lazy looking style to him and always seems to know what he's going to do with the ball before he receives it. A lot of his goals are out of the Le Tissier logbook too. Nowhere have I said I expect him to emulate him though, but would obviously be made up if he did.

In fact I think it will be very hard for him to do so as that type of player is not fashionable in the modern English game. As I said, I think he is a great prospect but not nearly ready for the first team squad yet.

The Dowell I saw yesterday in the U/23 derby loss, with Koeman in the stands watching, was rubbish. No intensity. Poor free kicks. Total rubbish not deserving of any promotion.
Give it a rest with the Koeman bashing here.
Dowell doesn't get involved enough for me to merit regular inclusion in the first team squad yet. He does have a lot of very good qualities though, many of the type that can't be taught. Didn't see the match yesterday but no player should be dismissed purely on the evidence of one football match.

I agree his style is quite lazy looking (although he does generally put a shift in) and lacks intensity, and for that reason alone I think he'll struggle to get much game time under Koeman.

That may be true and i hope it is, don't misconstrue my words as being arsey, genuinely do want to see young lads coming through, was part of my first everton experience. I grew up seeing cadamarteri/branch/jevons/jeffers to name a few break through which was great at the time, even if they weren't all gems.

But i am sure if you go back long enough there was people saying the same about ledson, before him lundstrum and so on. It seems to be a thing that for every barkley or rooney that breaks through you have another 5 or 6 that are talked up and ultimately sold before even seeing them really get a chance.
I agree. I heard a lot of that stuff about the youngsters you mention like Ledson and McLeod tipped as first teamers and they had only a run-hard game. Dowell is a cut above imo. I thunk he'd have been in a first team player by the time Koeman arrived if injury hadn't struck last season. He is very good, but I can see Koeman doing exactly what he did at S'ton and ignoring the academy players.

Every time I've watched Dowell he's looked talented but lightweight. Watching the u23 derby yesterday Davies and Walsh looked more ready for the first team.

Ward Prowse was well established in the first team before Koeman went to S'ton; Targett merely deputised for Bertrand who Koeman brought in (and which blocked off Targett's development)

Preseason 2015/2016 I thought Dowell looked like an outstanding prospect.
Preseason 2016/2017 he looked very ordinary.
At the moment he doesn't deserve a first team game, that has to be earned.
Some people on here would have most of the under 23s in the first team. Their result yesterday should bring a reality check.

they had a poor game yesterday, probably the first of the season. a lot of first team players are yet to have to have a good game this season.
