This is a really bad decision that will only be undone by appointing someone who is immediately obvious as being better than him. I am not sure such a person exists, and even if they do we are probably not going to get them; I’d imagine we will just pay millions to gamble that someone is slightly better than what we have again.

His record at the club speaks for itself; on the playing side at least we’ve gone from being an expensively assembled shambolic collection of basket cases to dare I say it a sensibly run, profitable outfit. When there was an internal debate over whether players were good enough, it stayed internal and most importantly time has proven him right on nearly all of those debates so far. His stance on January transfers was emphatically correct, given that a large part of the waste was down to such panic signings and that not bringing people in forced the two managers involved into reassessing what they had, resulting in better tactics, better performances and ultimately better results.

If we end up appointing someone, like Weir for example, because of his “links” to the club rather than his competence then we may as well start the “Yanks Out!” chants now - because that’s exactly where we will end up sooner rather than later. This club has stood by familiar mediocrity for far too long at this point and it needs to stop.
We had people calling for yanks out when they fired dyche
We had people calling for yanks out when they hired moyes

All they have done is buy the club when the other prospects were 777 and textor, restructure the debt to save us from crippling interest payments. Make all the right decisions on and off the pitch.

Being a fine footballer is the important thing in identifying football talent? 😂

….of course not, the ‘fine footballer’ was a stand alone sentence. If I remember rightly he played for England semi-pro team, obviously not a qualification to identifying talent but he is a proper football man. You’d always see him a schoolboy and youth games and obviously Sean was a super talented Schoolboy International.

No idea if he’s heading here, suspect Moyes was in charge when Mick had a bit a reported falling out with the club but I’m not entirely sure.

Better 3 months before than 3 weeks before. If they have decided thelwell isn’t the guy moving forward it would be baffling to let him lead the biggest squad rebuild ever
I do agree with this. If that's their assessment of him, then yes absolutely they should act accordingly.

I just think the risk/reward ratio of not keeping him on is waaaaay off. But we'll see!

There's a DOF at West Ham. There's a DOF everywhere. If we are really thinking of binning off the role of DOF we will be pretty much the only major club without one. Then what happens when the manager leaves? Going 100% in on a 60+ year old manager and giving them total control of the football club is madness.
Yep.

As per the DoF thing - Steiden only came in at West Ham towards the end. Most of these were signed by Moyes and Newman (who it seems may be coming here). It's a treble whammy of bad for me:

1) We need to be ready to go in the summer with so much upheaval and this knocks it right out.

2) As you said, it makes us a retrograde operator again and also could concentrate too much power into the manager's hands.

3) Moyes' record in recruitment in the decade plus since he left us is pretty poor. For the most part he had a decent amount of money to spend too.

Very worrying direction imo. As a previous poster said, if Thelwell is going, it should be for someone who is even better.

The timing of this is curious, it comes as Arsenal are about to appoint a new sporting director.

The names on their shortlist are: Dan Ashworth, Andrea Berta, Roberto Olabe and Thiago Scuro.

I wonder has a decision been made there and now some of the names above are "available" for other clubs.

Used to play for Everton, lar.

No one pines for ex-players like the fans of this club.
Or Moyes Knows Weir's morals, knows what he is looking to implement. I would always trust Moyes's practice of finding characters (regarding this club) than literally anyone's. Him coming back has been mine & my families biggest Everton wish since he left, If Weir is the man to supplement Moyes knowledge of other leagues, Both on the same page ?? I'm in.

Don’t really get the clamour for Weir, but what I would say is he is highly intelligent having been to Uni in the US prior to his pro career, and he would know the type of player that suits a Moyes Everton.
That said, appointing a DoF because a relationship with the current manager seems somewhat short sighted.

I mean has it been that poor? Soucek, Bowen, Alvarez Paqueta, Kudos etc have all been really good players who what he paid for them?
