This is from todays Daily Mirror............

Everton boss David Moyes is poised to clinch a £6million move for Dutch midfield giant Orlando Engelaar.

The Goodison club have already made contact with Engelaar's representatives over a move to the Premier League from FC Twente. Schalke are also keen on the 6ft 6in star.

I guess it has to be taken into context, ideally you want to sign younger players because, they are value for money, have a resale value as an asset and have longevity in what they can offer to the team.

On the other hand the defensive midfeild role is one where expeirence and positional play, and discpline are strongly required. I guess a good question to ask is would Cars have been as good for us at 21 as he was at 29, i doubht it, much of his strength was built around his expierence.

I dont think it would necessarily be a disadvantage us signing him in terms of his age and expierence, what you have to remeber to is that otehr targets such as Manny or existing players like Rodwell will have to oppunrtunity to learn their trade in that position before the payer in questionleft us!

I agree. If Moyes feels he'll fit in well then he'll do just that. Experience is key for that position, and if he's solid enough it gives the midfielders in front (flair players etc) more push to brek forward knowing there's a solid enough player that knows the role in covering.

And Holland are [Poor language removed] hot in the Euro's so far, if he gets into the 1st team regularly then he must have some talant.

And also - £6mill for him and the rumoured £6mill for Manny is very good buisness IMO. There should be plenty in the kitty for a big money signing.

He's probably a late bloomer. I think we need a bit of experience in the side. With Carsley and Stubbs gone we only really have Neville who is experienced.

Your probably right TB, its just that i aint heard of him before. But id not heard of pienaar or arteta either. so i'll trust the gaffer if we bring him in.

Experirnce is as vital as anything in football.

I'm not sure if i want him. His age is a massive sticking point for me, i don't want someone that is gonna be 30 by the time next season comes around. i want a young player such as Huddlestone for this position, who we can keep in the knowledge that he can go on for a good few years.

I'm a fan of huddlestone too for the reason's you've mentioned. But he's too much compared to this feller, and you need someone in the middle that has the experience to hold that role comfortably.

If we buy Huddlestone, even though he has played more prem games and has more experience, we're almost doing what we could do with Rodwell in developing a player.

See what Moyes does.

I think that most people harping on about this guy here either haven't watched him, or haven't watched the games very closely... he is NOT a defensive midfielder! De Jong playes as the midfield enforcer and this guy plays a more all round game. He is not the answer when it comes to replacing Carsley... he plays more in the 'Fernandes' roll of deep(ish) playmaker. Problem is he mainly passes sideways and gives the balla way about 50% of the time when passing it forwards. He has a limited range of passing, is clumsy and doesn't look a threat going forwards. His only redeeming attribute is his height.

Do you think Moyes had an interest in him before the Euro's? Probably not and he's not the type of manager to throw away £6mill on a player he's seen play 3 times.

Not good enough, doesn't fit the role we need the most in our team, and is too old, isn't a great tackler, isn't a great passer, doesn't seem to have a shot on him... need I go on?

Spot on (y) Good post.

Orlando Engelaar looks good at the moment but im not convinced he will play that way for us.
ive seen linderoth play like a world beater for sweden but he was crap in an everton shirt.
i expect engalaar to be the same. the age isnt right either imo.

if we have to get a late 20's 30's player then id rather have someone with more of a track record.

for the dm role we need someone with a bit of venom ,a mad man , a psycho in fact. someone who has to be wheeled to the pitch in a hannibal lecter restraint.someone whos knuckles drag on the floor .someone who talks like taz the tazmanian devil. someone who chops up bunnies with an axe in there spare time. someone with a crazy beard and rapist eyes ......someone like gattuso (or similar but of a younger age).

where are all the psycho footballers gone ????
