Just for fun......Our Own Class Of 92

Lets ask our youth team experts...

@messymascot I dont think Koeman wants to develop the youth and would prefer to go with experience. Interestingly the players you mention have all got minutes for us...

What we seem to lack are wingers and forwards coming through, United were devastating on the counter with Giggs, Sharpe and Kanchelskis and at the moment weve only had Deulofeu whose looked at that level a year ago.

Hopefully Unsworth keeps doing well and is our next manager so we see these lads in the team consistently and not dropped after a man of the match performance (Holgate)!
I'll deal with the wingers comment first Zat. I'd say it's the one weak link (apart from a really top quality young GK) in our youth set up. We tend to play a 433 system with the widemen in the front 3 consisting of either attacking midfielders ( Holland, Charsley, Dowell, Evans) or strikers (Henen, McAleney, Courteny Duffus, Dyson, Broadhead). The only recognised winger we have at the club is Michael Donohue. I've been very impressed with him at under 18 level but he hasn't featured so far this season for the under 23s. It's possible he may be injured but I suspect he's struggling to break into a very large and talented squad, similar to Broadhead and Brewster. I am a little bit surprised by this as he is a very tricky customer who offers something different to the rest of the squad. We could have done with somebody like him in the recent games against Sunderland, United and Wolves when we struggled to break down very organised teams who defended in numbers.

As regards the thread as a whole, it's very difficult now to emulate what happened at United 20 years ago. Even at a top club like United, Giggs was a regular at 17, Neville, Butt and Scholes (the latter mainly from the bench) at 19, and Beckham breaking through at 20. It's hard to see that happening at any premier club now given the volume of seasoned international foreign players they have to compete with.

It's also hard to compare our young players with the class of 92. United won the F A youth cup but we have been very successful in the under 18 league over the last 3 years. Our players have also been more prominent in the England youth squads. Scholes for example, hardly featured at all and Butt and Beckham were also rarely used, even upto under 21 level.

I would say there are probably as many as 10/11 of the current crop who have a chance of making it as a premier player, which, in itself, is a great endorsement of our academy. That's far too many to come through at Everton though so most will probably have to move on to achieve their aims. It's going to be even more difficult under Koeman as I don't think he trusts the inconsistency that young players inevitably bring to the table.

If I were to put money on which two players had the best chance of making it at Everton I'd probably surprise a few. Beni Baningime is a very modern day DM. Takes up very intelligent defensive positions and has a great eye for a pass. The other is Anthony Evans. Fantastic at timing runs and cool and collected in front of goal. Hate to say it but he reminds me very much of Terry McDermott.

Glad you mentioned Beni Banginime, saw him for the youth team last season, very impressed with his determinations do
work rate, he got injured in that game and I think that kept him out for quite a spell, he is still eligible to play for the youth team this season I think, looks a good prospect.

I know it's blasphemous to say it on here but some of our youth prospects aren't as good as we think they are.

Look at how many have broke in to the first team in the past decade

Yeah, most of these players won't make the cut here.

not sure why some fans still hang onto this hope that we are going to get a massive burst from the academy these days? Ledson Baxter Lumstrum Green Duffy all to name a few players who looked great and yet didn't end up in the first team.

If bloody ledson can go from massively rated to sold before he breaks through, then we are lucky if one of the OP named youngsters genuinely make the first team in the future.

I suppose its like a wife beater giving his Mrs a black eye then saying "she's a good girl really".

Not really.

Barkley needed to go off vs Sunderland as he was been a liability - his display was that bad.

He started the next game and despite not being at his best hasn't been anywhere near the level he was at Sunderland.

Donohue has been told he has no future at the club.

I know a friend of a friend who knows the family. Was told that 23s won't be using wingers. He trains every day and won't be given a chance to play. Afraid a loan away in the transfer window is the only chance he has of moving his career forward. Apparently the u23 manager hasn't he spoken to him for over 3 months, but isn't the only lad in that position who are known as the victim squad.

They are only kids desperate to play football yet are being treated in a poor way. No thought about their mental welfare when the manager they want to impress won't even speak with them. No wonder English football is in the state that it is.....

If that's the case it is poor treatment indeed. I find it hard to believe that Unsworth and the academy staff would treat the lads like this though. But in addition to Donohue there are the likes of Brewster and Broadhead who have hardly kicked a ball this year, and they were both outstanding in the U18s last season.

Weve got 4 in the u20s England squad havent we? If they can get through to U21 squad then theyve generally 'made it' and should be in our squad...

Baningime seems to get good write ups in the youth thread...which player is he similar to?

Youre referring to Unsworth or Koeman?

I wouldnt be surprised if Koeman told Unsworth the formation he wanted them to play to have a feel of them if they were able to improve or not...also not speaking with them.
