Part of the problem at least in Europe standard wise was the break up of the Soviet Union, Yugoslavia and the fall of the iron curtain. Even though communism is a vile ideology it worked it a sporting context as in the old days countries from behind the iron curtain were much better at togger then now so yes in those days the standards were much higher in general
