Toxteth Blue has it right, Mik. If a huge offer came in, it would have to be seriously looked at. Thankfully, it will be Moyes that makes the decision should that occur. But if he chose to sell, you can't say it wouldn't be with good intentions.
That was then, in order to buy the players we need to get to that next level, it would need the sale of 3 Rooneys.
But thats it for me mate, everybody is saying £20m is huge offer, its not, its chicken feed for a player of Lescotts quality and also for a club like City.
For me the bidding should start at £30m, for that money I might consider it to be fair offer.
But my whole arguement is based on the fact we would making 1 area of the pitch weak, in order to make another area stronger. For me it doesnt make sense.
Would you accept it?
It makes sense if you make one area of the pitch MUCH stronger, and one area of the pitch slightly weaker.
In the opinion of Capello, Ferdinand, Terry, Upson, King, Jagielka and possibly now Cahill are better centre halves. That's just the English. Then, in the Premier League alone, you've got the likes of Vidic, Skrtel, Carvalho, Alex, Hangeland (based on 1 season) and Woodgate who are, defensively, better than Lescott.
Far from being a huge gulf between Lescott and everybody else, he's actually in a group with a lot of other players. His biggest assets are that he can play left back and he scores a few goals.
Goalscoring is nice, but his career record is a goal every 15 games or so. His Everton record, inflated by one good season, is about 1 in 8. It's not exactly Steve Bruce getting 20 in a season. Put it this way - replacing Osman with a world class player would result in a lot more than 4 extra goals a season.
By the way, I do think that if Torres had scored that one on one in the derby at Anfield (after he caught Lescott flat footed and out of position on a long punt), and we'd have lost as a result, the general opinion of Lescott would be lower.
For me the bidding should start at £30m, for that money I might consider it to be fair offer.
For £30m I would possibly accept it. BUT ONLY if I had a replacement lined up and the rest of the money went to buy The Mout.
The replacement would have to be of the same standard, not any less. I think you would be hard pressed to do that.
OK, in your opinion a fair offer places Lescott as the 11th most expensive footballer of all time? And the most expensive defender of all time?
(Wikipedia had better be right this time....)
Skirtel, Hangeland, Upson, Cahill, Alex, King and Woodgate are all debatable in my opinion.
Lescott best attribute is he's a very good defender and his performances speak for themselves. One mistake wouldn't change my opinion of him and I doubt it would for alot of Blues.
He is without doubt one of the best defenders in the League.
