Great extract from Becky Tallentire's book on Everton wives posted on Toffeeweb - this time about Mrs Morrissey.

Does anyone know why Johnny has never been brought back on the pitch to Goodison to take the deserved plaudits from all those who remember him, like so many others have been over the years?
I speak to Johnny occasionally, and basically his answer is that he now has a new life. What went on in the past is another time. His son Johnny has the same outlook. They are just not interested.

Didn't his lad play for Tranmere? One hard player was Morrisey. I rememember his goal after 24secs against Monchoengladbach. And putting Jack Charllton in his place. Little black book

Didn't he get done for having a load of stolen fags in his garage? Good player...strong tackler for a winger. It was tough in those days!!
Gerry Byrne kept his cement from a building site, Mickey Thomas kept his counterfeit 'Tenners' and Tony Kay & Grobbelaar kept their 'Brown
Envelopes all in the same garage.

Just been reading wikipedia on Johnny Morrissey. The great Jimmy Greaves said that "Johnny always got the retaliation in first".
Greavsie also said of his teammate Ron 'Chopper' Harris after a particularly nasty tackle on one of the opposition, the Ref said
"Ron that tackle was a bit late" and Harris said "Sorry ref, I got there as soon as I could".

Tony told me he never had any brown envelopes, just had a bet because he knew what was going down.......I worked bar a couple of times with him and played with him in some Mickey Mouse games(I think I was Mickey Mouse) he would put great balls inside the full back for me which I never read quickly enough...he called me the grand old man of football....I was in my twenties!!!;)

I think I’ve told this little story on here before regarding Johnny Morrissey, if so apologies!

When I was about 10 I used to go to Boys Club in our local church hall on a Friday night, 5 a side, table tennis, Cheese and Onion crisps and plastic cups of “pop”! I had been in Walton hospital for an operation and therefore missed one particular Friday night - in typical fashion it was the Friday night that Johnny Morrissey was visiting, I was absolutely gutted!

So there I was lying on the settee feeling all sorry for myself that I was missing seeing Johnny Morrissey at Boys Club, and there was a knock on our front door! The guy who ran the Boys Club had only gone and told Johnny Morrissey about me and my op and how gutted I was to be missing him and the man himself said well let’s go and pay him a visit!

He stayed about twenty minutes having a good old matter and a cup of tea that my Mum insisted he have!

Fantastic player who would be worth a fortune these days, defended well if needed, great crosser of the ball and scored some cracking goals!

Great memory of a great night, even if I did miss out in the 5 a side and my pop!
