John Stones

Shocked at the lack of posters defending the lad , usually this thread is full of bluff merchants hanging on to his coat tails proclaiming him the greatest CB of all time and themselves as football sages and if you say otherwise you know sod all about football and should be hung! Hi!

I mean, all those Park Enders he told to pipe down against Spurs?

That is precisely the reason they were yelling "get rid" when he started performing circus tricks.

That was the sensible thing to do then.....that was the sensible thing to do today.

Considering how many of his passes out of defence ended up in the stand there is a certain irony that he wouldn't choose to hoof it there as well.
Robles is the real villain, that is a piss poor clearance to give a corner.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing regarding Stones, but Robles really should be doing better there.

He didn't look like he even expected it tbh, as Stones had the chance to clear it first time but chose not to then gave him an awkward ball with someone already in front of him...

At that point "anywhere" is the correct place to play it.

I'd say they're equally bad for not clearing it (imo obvs Stones a bit worse, because ^), but the real culprit is not even trying to work on set pieces and hoping we don't come up against a side that does, which obviously will never happen as everyone works on them.

I also think that there are too many backpasses to Robles, too much responsibility avoidance.

I think most people were surprisied by the Stones dance routine and then the nutty back pass and I include Robles.

Stones had been kicking the ball into touch all of the first half but got himself into a mess and thought, I know, time for a surprise back pass and lets hope the goalie can sort it for me. Robles did not have time to control and kick but had to slash at it to get it away.

He is good but fact is we have horrible defensive record this season- so he is clearly not (yet) a whole team/game changing defensive player. SO, given our horrible defense i wouldn't mind too much selling him for 40 M ++ , getting a v good , proven replacement for @20 million and then using the other 20M towards another LW player.

The players aren't the issue. It's the system we play in terms of defending.

We don't defend as a unit.

Spot on. That's our fundamental problem and I believe that's what Baines was alluding to. If your system is not right then it undermines individual confidence and good players look crap and make mistakes. A good system breeds confidence.
