I think Chelsea mistakenly believed that Everton would sell John Stones and that price was the only issue. By starting low they believed that would influence the final selling price.
If the first bid was 40m then the final price would still have been north of that.
However, they started with a bid that was too low and the mortal sin committed by them was making that bid public. It had the exact opposite effect of what was intended.
Regarding the future of John Stones going forward. It is interesting to speculate, but to know what will hapeen there is one question to be answered.
What does John Stones want to do ?
We know that at least Chelsea want to buy him, we are almost certain the agent is pushing his client to move and we know the player asked for a move.
But, is the player desperate to get away, has he told the manager that he will agitate to go and will move just as soon as possible.
Or
Is he happy to stay ,play and learn in the knowledge that a transfer will probably happen at some stage but in the meantime sign an improved contract, play for the club, establish himself at international level and keep away from everything else.
These are the factors that will determine how long he stays with us.
