Joe Williams

From all reports, rock solid, high energy, no nonsense. Can absolutely see him being a squad player for us for many years. Posted in the youth thread, every team needs a Joe Williams.

On the bench again, must be very close to getting on the pitch. Could have had 5mins with kenny at the end imo just to get used to the atmosphere and pace.

Time to bump Joe's thread ...... in hopeful anticipation of a PL appearance against Watford, and of course that even more coveted tag "Player" on GOT.

It's worth a recap on Joe for those unfamiliar with him. 20 years old, has mainly been seen as a Defensive mid, but has also played as a more forward mid recently for u 23s. He's a hard working, no nonsense , tough tackling guy who perhaps over recent years has been seen as lacking the finesse of a Davies, Ledson or Dowell. He's never been out on loan and although called up to England U20/21 I don't believe he ever started or appeared for England . One time rumours that Man Utd rated him and wanted him for their u21s certainly raised his " Joe who?" Profile.

A big reason for the no loan/ England caps was that he sustained a significant knee injury in the u21s last game of last season , 15/16 , against Chelsea which kept him out for 5 months, then shortly after his come back he sustained an ankle injury in November which kept him out until February. The injuries and his ability to fight his way back say a lot about Joe and his character - he suffered the injury against Chelsea in the first 20 mins but still completed the match. It's also worth saying he was the u21s Player of the Season last season and captained them many times.

He returned for the U23s in February and although I've only seen him in the five or six televised games since he's been impressive in those games, and interestingly has actually added a degree of finesse to his games. He looks more stylish and comfortable on the ball , knows when to release a pass and has added the ability to push forward to his game, maybe it was always there and playing him further forward has released the ability. Don't expect 30 yard cross field passes from him and he's a different player from Davies or Dowell.

We've got so many good players in our "Golden Generation" that we really can't afford to be sentimental in our assessment, some very promising players are not going to make it with us. Joe Williams though is one of those Evertonians that you can't help but admire in his tenacity to fight his way back and hope he makes it. With Mo Besic on the verge of a return he may not get his chance this season but I hope he does...... if not I'll bump this again pre-season in the hope he eventually gets that coverted Player tag.;)

With 7th guaranteed we're really now only playing for pride in our performances. Absolutely no reason at all not to at least give him a few minutes. Especially with a lot of the "usual" bench going away with England.

He deserves a chance over Besic.

Dont know if there is a thread but watched the under 23s 5 times this seasons live and that beni looks quality
U23s and U18s are covered in depth in the Everton Youth Teams thread mate , https://www.grandoldteam.com/forum/threads/everton-youth-teams-thread.59260/

Combining both teams in one thread means the up and coming u18s like Beni get covered together e.g potential for moving up to U23s, and as another example , for most of us the first real glimpse and discussion about Beni was his good performances at the Dallas Cup March 2016. His progression has been great to see, he always looked good now he's starting to perform at a decent level. Having said that, Beni is still relatively inexperienced even at U23s level , 5 or 6 ish starts I think, and on Monday he was caught rushing towards the man about to recieve the ball a couple of times allowing the ball to be passed on quickly leaving him stranded in no mans land. Inexperience that, and easily rectified, his on the ball talents remain.

As has been said there are 5 players off with England , and with Walsh injured, there may be a bench spot for Beni , but at the moment I'd have Williams ahead of him.
