Bit before my time as a player but I loved him as a manager. Looking at his wiki page he only managed double figures twice after those 4 high scoring seasons. Did he get an injury?

Talking rubbish 5 TH highest ever EFC goal scorer!

Thank you for your considered response.

I'm expressing an opinion which I think has some merit. If I can manage to do so without unnecessarily confrontational language, perhaps you could manage to read the whole response.

He got some criticism from the terraces when he came in. He over came the doubters.
He scored a lot of goals. I believe a better player would have scored more.
He was part of a very great team.

Whether he was fifth, third, ninth top scorer for Everton is neither here nor there. I didn't enter into that argument.

You'll be on ignore in five minutes. I prefer to discuss things with people who are vaguely rational.

Yes his back as in those days He got clobbered bad style- some of the centre halfs got away with murder!
There were some bruises around -- Jack charlton - Ron Yeats- Mike England etc!

He was a great EFC centre forward - my Advatar may be my lack of reasoning with you- sorry blue mist!lol

Think formations etc were different back then. Wing half etc, not even sure what position that is to be honest, haha.

I suppose maybe teams didn't play with two out and out forwards back then? For example, despite all his goals was bobby charlton classed as a striker?

Would you count Jimmy husband and then whittle as a strike partner?
Maybe Alan whittle, but Jimmy Husband tended to play right wing - Whittle came in for Bally being suspended in the run in, but kept his place as he scored a goal in every game an EFC record in continuous games!
By the way Husband was injured for the last on and off 13 games in the important championship run in!
eight games in which Whittle took his place, he played more central than Husband hence the goals he scored, which were vital - 19 goals Royle got in that year!

I think Royle "lost the plot" really and we lacked a Chairman who had the skill to take the pressure out of the situation. He was increasingly paranoid and banning Echo Journalists. He probably had some basis for his paranoia and certainly sections of the press wanted him gone.

Royle was lucky in that he had a 2 year honeymoon golden period and it was (much like Martinez this season) the first time things went a bit wrong. I think Joe struggled to handle that and was confused what was happening. It was a great shame, as it took till Moyes came in for us to recover to anything like what we got too under Royle.

What contributed to the demise. Well Southall (like Howard this season) had gone on a year too far. We didn't replace him well enough. Likewise Watson showed his age a bit. Fergusan became injury prone. Kanchelskis who had been majestic lost interest. As others had said Parkinson got injured later on too. I always felt he was playing through injury a bit and his form dipped.

In those days squads weren't as big and that is 5 fairly important players we had lost. Alongside that lads like Horne and Ebbrell had injury difficulties and were moved on as well as guys like Rideout. We also lost Limpar and never really replaced his creativity.

We bought quite well, Speed was excellent. Barmby would go on to do very well for us but struggled to produce under Royle and certainly didn't get to anything like Kanchelskis's level.

Royle wanted to sign Flo who went on to be an excellent acquisition for Chelsea. He'd had been a great foil for Fergusan had we have got him.

In the end it was a season where injuries, players loss of form and confidence and age caught up with different players at once. We should have kept Royle. Johnson handled the situation badly. I think had Kenwright been in charge he'd have calmed Royle down, made it clear he was going nowhere and Joe could have seen out the season and prepared for a summer of rebuilding that was needed. That was what was required, a calm supportive approach.

Joey1966, where you around at the time? Did you see him play in his prime?
Yes - He was so hard working, I used to tell the old sods stood next to me to give him a chance as when he came in he was so raw , but a talent, he ran the line so well he maintained this in all his blues career - when he got the confidence the ball would go in the net most times!
I remember the 2-0 victory when Yard dog Yeats Liverpool Gorrila of a centre half stated Joe would not win any high balls in the air to him as they knew he linked the play up into attack with his lay off's etc, I was stood in a packed Kop half crushed at the age of 12 years old when Joe lept above Yeats to head in the first Whittle got the 2nd we played them off the park that day - My vivid memory was the packed blue Anfield road end Chanting Champions Champions non stop - this was a good Red team we were beating in a crucial league run in in 1970!
Johnny Morrissey was the big supplier to Joe's goals, his crosses were inch perfect but Joe had the ability to get up high - He could shoot with either foot, it was in an era when EFC were a delight to watch, with the best midfield trio I have ever seen, but Joe played his part in his work rate his skill on the ground , and in the air - his link up play was first rate, Bally inspired most of the team , no more than big Joe - He took over the pen taking off bally as I have never witnessed a top corner penalty taker as Joe used to thump it there only seen him miss one in the pen shoot out in the European cup v Brussia Munchen Gladbach!
He cost us nothing he started off as a wing half he became a great EFC Centre Forward my favorite goal was in a defeat v Leeds away a horizontal diving header from a Bally free kick, again I was there even younger Bally just chippred it towards The Leeds Keeper Gary Sprake - Joe speeded in and dived horizontally to back head it over Sprake's shoulder, its on YTUBE somewhere so I could not find it today I will look for it a fantastic goal in a 2-1 defeat!
Yes he was my boyhood hero as he had the hard job of replacing the Golden Vision , and the early stick he got was unfair he was so young, but I just knew he would make it, and he went on to play for England deservedly so! heres a game with Joe and the great alex in the team V Unt the first game of the season v Goodison its in parts see the young Joe in action!

I was 14 and went to nearly all the games the year we won the league, I had two posters on my bedroom wall Joe Royle and Jimmy Husband.
Jimmy used to drive a yellow E-Type Jag :D
Joe was a fantastic CF , brilliant in the air and could really thump the ball , his pens right down the middle at warp factor 1 .
Jimmy was a good forward bit light weight but he had others looking after him , great times , great team !

I know he came back to Goodison with a few clubs (Man City, Norwich), but I was too young to recall this. However, I remember him playing up front for Bristol City at Goodison, perhaps in about 1979-80 (not the 4-1 when King scored a hat-trick)
