JOE ROYLE

Wasn't he going to be director of football for the youth team or something?

Nope. That's Alan Irvine's role, and I think we can safely say that he's doing a very fine job at the moment, given the U-18s title win and the numerous Academy players excelling for England at many levels.

Martinez was going to create a role for Royle, to scout and monitor our young players that go out on loan. Everton & Martinez were keen, they even spoke publicly about it before it was a done deal, which is so unlike Martinez.

It's all very strange. Royle is based in the north west and I can't imagine he's moving down to Norfolk, or is even swayed by money at this point.

Maybe Royle is still bothered by the nature of his acrimonious 1997 exit from the club and decided it was best not to come back, even in another capacity.

The role he's been given at norwich is assisting a close friend with the 1st team , while we only offered him a role in the academy.

You can see why he'd want to take a more hands on job rather than a job on the side of the operation
No offense like, but this is Joe Royle we're talking about. A genuine Everton legend and a Scouser born and bred AND, more importantly, an intelligent, effusive and knowledgeable football man. I love him hearing talk football, he still clearly has his nous. I don't for one second believe that Alan Ball's famous creed was at all trite... it was true. Once Everton has touched you - Royle would have loved to return, he said as much. Martinez would have loved him to return, he said as much.

The only ones who stayed silent were the directors et al. And now he's at Norwich.

I'll leave you to work out who's to blame.

Until we hear from Royle, I really think we should hang fire on this before criticising the club.

Martinez could not have been more positive in speaking of Royle and creating a role for him.

Who knows what happened? You wouldn't logically choose Championship club Norwich over Everton, unless you had your reasons. Because of that, I definitely think there's more to this than meets the eye. Maybe Royle didn't like the role offered to him by Martinez.

Joe Royle is a good guy and an Everton legend. It would have been nice to have him on board, but Everton will do just fine without him. We should just wish him all the best.

Here's an interview with royle about taking the Norwich job, doesn't say anything unexpected mind

The 65-year-old has been out of the game since 2009 but was one of the first people that Neil Adams called when he was appointed full-time Canaries boss in April.

Adams was one of the star players in Royle’s Oldham team which won promotion to the top-flight in 1991 and he was keen to be reunited with his former mentor.

Everton legend Royle twice led Ipswich Town to the play-offs as manager (2004 and 2005), despite the club going into administration following their relegation from the Premiership. He finished his playing career at Norwich City, injuries limited his appearances for the Norfolk club.

In an exclusive interview with the EADT and Ipswich Star, Royle said: “I signed Neil as a player, he was a great servant during those halcyon days at Oldham, a major player, and we have always kept in touch.

“I congratulated him when he won the FA Youth Cup with Norwich a few years ago because that was such a great achievement when you consider who much money the big clubs spend on recruiting kids.

“He called me as soon as he got the job, asked me if I wanted to join him and I just said ‘I’m there’.

“I’ve been looking to get back into the game, but when you’re over 60 there is this perception that you are out of touch or have lost your marbles.

“There have been one or two possibilities in recent years, but it was nice that Neil and David McNally (Norwich chief executive) came to me.
Asked if he was worried that the decision to join Norwich would taint his reputation among Ipswich fans, he quipped: “I don’t know about that, I seem to remember a few of them booed me when I first went there!

“Joking aside, I have great affection for both clubs. I never disrespected Norwich while I was Ipswich manager and I won’t be disrespecting Ipswich now I’m at Norwich.

“They are both fine clubs that are run by good people. There’s nothing I’d like more than for both clubs to go up next season and for the East Anglian derby to return to the Premier League.”

He continued: “I’m obviously looking forward to the derby games next season. I think both clubs should be up there challenging for promotion.

“Ipswich had a good season under Mick McCarthy and seem to be going in the right direction, while Norwich have the nucleus of a side that only went down by three points.”

On what his role as ‘football consultant’ will entail, Royle said: “Anything Neil wants me to help him with really. I’ve already met with him and some of the board to discuss transfer targets and few enquiries have already gone in.

“It’s important to say that the manager will always have the final say, as should always be the case.”

Come on mate, how often do 'the directors' at Everton speak publicly about ANYTHING? Answer: Never.

Martinez made the offer public: http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/everton-fc-legend-joe-royle-7019891

Liverpool Echo, April 22nd, 2014:

Roberto Martinez says Everton FC legend Joe Royle is “tailor made” for a new role he has created at the club.

Martinez wants Goodison great Royle to be the Blues new development director to monitor players out on loan and work closely with those graduating from the under-21s.

The Everton boss has held initial talks with Royle and believes the former title-winning striker – who went on to lift the FA Cup as manager – will be a “terrific” addition to his backroom staff.

And Martinez believes that Royle has all the key attributes to succeed in a job that he sees as vital to helping Academy graduates bridge the gap to the first-team.

"I would love if Joe could join us,” Martinez told the ECHO.

“It is a very, very important role we are trying to develop in the development part of a footballer.

"Joe brings everything that we are looking in that position.

"He is an Evertonian, he knows the football club inside and out, he has been a manager at the club who has won silverware and he can help give us a real winning mentality into the youngsters.

"And he can find those small percentages in players at the age of 18, 19, 20 and 21, that they are missing before getting into the first-team squad.

"It is a tailor-made role for Joe and we'll find out very soon if we can get that into place. He will be a terrific addition.”

Martinez explained: "He will look at the players who have gone through under-21 level and have been developed to their maximum potential with Alan Stubbs and his team.

“They will then go to Joe and find what is next for them.

“That could be out on loan, it could be individual programmes, it could be allowing them to fulfil what is needed as professionals and try to get as many of them in the first-team."

Then Joe Royle wrote on his website on April 21st, 2014:

THE national Press has got wind of a possible return to Everton for yours truly and I’m not going to deny that there is such a possiblity. I have talked with Goodison manager Roberto Martinez and chairman Bill Kenwright about taking up a role next season, monitoring the Under-21 players. Nothing has been decided, but I am excited at the prospect of going back, for a third stint, to the club where my career began nearly 50 years ago.

I left Everton as manager in 1997 with a heavy heart and I feel I still have something to contribute to the club I love, unfinished business if you like. Roberto and I agree that there is a place for someone who can cast an experienced eye over the young players’ progress, both within the club and while out on loan. All the more so as we no longer have regular reserve team football and, therefore, the capacity to judge a player’s development in regular, competitive conditions. I can’t say more at this stage, simply because there is no more to say. As they say, watch this space.

For the whole thing to fall through, and then for Royle to go to Norwich in a consultancy role, suggests there has been a disagreement along the way over the past month.

I really can't see why or how the board or directors would block Martinez' recruitment of Royle, or any other backroom staff members. We're hardly talking massive money here. Even if Royle received the Norwich offer, he could easily have turned it down and said he'd already promised to take up a role at Everton.

"Lets slate the club even though we have no idea why Royle went to Norwich"
Taking an educated guess, mate. The two people I respect most in this situation - Martinez and Royle - were keen. From there on out, the ball was in the club's court.

I'm even certain they were Royle's exact words

His exact words are in my post on the previous page, including him saying "I have talked with Goodison manager Roberto Martinez and chairman Bill Kenwright about taking up a role next season...".

I can't imagine Kenwright telling Joe Royle to do one, so there's 3 people supposedly keen. Manager & chairman. Who's the person who's supposedly nixed this? Maybe Royle just had a change of heart. Or maybe Martinez did.

Bill could'nt afford the apointment because he's funneled all the money of too the Caribbean and hid it under "other operating costs"
