Joe Hart is intent on leaving Manchester City before the transfer window closes if a move beneficial to his long-term career is on offer, otherwise the out-of-favour goalkeeper will stay at the club.

While a loan deal to Sevilla, who are interested in the England No1, would offer Champions League football, it is understood there is hesitation in the Hart camp as to whether this is a solution that would work only in the short term.

This does not mean it has been ruled out, as is the case for signing with a domestic club on a temporary basis, with Everton interested in him. Liverpool, though, do not want Hart, after Jürgen Klopp signed Lorius Karius, the 23-year-old German, at the start of the summer, with Simon Mignolet already at the club.

However, what is driving any decision is the determination to do what is best for Hart over the next few seasons, rather than the immediate future. There is a recognition that his options may be limited in the current window and so he would be prepared to stay at City until the January window, at the earliest, and reassess his options then.

The 29-year-old has been aware of Pep Guardiola’s lack of confidence in him throughout the summer. This meant the head coach’s decision to drop him for game against Sunderland in the season opener on Saturday and the victory against Steaua Bucharest in the Champions League on Tuesday night came as no surprise to Hart.

Guardiola has been intent on recruiting an alternative to the keeper virtually since the Catalan was announced as Manuel Pellegrini’s replacement on 1 February. This suggests Hart may find it particularly difficult to reclaim his starting berth unless Guardiola has a major change of heart or he finds it impossible to sign a replacement.

City are pursuing Barcelona’s Claudio Bravo but with Marc-André ter Stegen injured may be reluctant to allow his sale before buying a replacement.

Luis Enrique’s team begin the defence of their La Liga title on Saturday and the coach is keen to ensure he has a second goalkeeper in place. The Barcelona coach said this week: “I understand the rumour mill is attractive but I don’t want to and mustn’t get involved in all that.

“I think, though I could be wrong, that some players are going to come in and I think that also some are going to leave. What interests me is the final of the Super Cup [on Wednesday night], gaining a title which is attractive for us.”

Ter Stegen remains Guardiola’s first choice as he is closer to the style of Manuel Neuer as a sweeper-keeper – which allows him to play out from the back with his feet – that the manager desires. However, Barcelona are not willing to sell Ter Stegen, who has been the Champions League goalkeeper for the past two seasons. He is 24 and considered the better long-term option. Bravo is 33 and so Barcelona are willing to countenance his sale.

20-25m - or a loan deal would be a good deal for us IMO. i know you dont rate him but i think he'd be perfect for us right now
Like I stated its ok if we have money to burn we have more priorities outfield than in goal at the present time if we secure all the outfield players keep Lukarku the it's a sign we have funds if he comes and we end up short elsewhere it's a waste o money even on wages it's iffy IMO!
The fact he wants to,use a club for 12 months is a cheek too!

"Unique Player Roles"?

You mean their position, right?
no

fairly certain you understand the difference between a defensive mid vs a center mid

or wingers who's jobs are to bring the ball inside on their dominant foot to create in tight spaces and take shots vs wingers that take it outside and cross with their dominant food

not hard to understand really

disagree with you completely, you can get away with players not being absolutely top notch outfield, but every top team needs a very very good goalie, hart is that, despite what the media want you to believe.

goalkeeper for me is the most vital position to fill, the rest are just squad fillers / squad enhancers for me.

Well hart will be very busy then, and we will find if he is up to it one keeper was last Sat?

hopefully not too busy with our new defensive shape, and williams in the side!

stekelenberg did great, but that was just one game. Hart has done that and more on a way more consistent basis.

So, their positions then?

Folk just over complicate it.

In football you have a defence. 4 plus a keeper usually. Then a midfield, which is a combo of defensive players, and attacking players.

And a striker, or maybe 2.

If everyone does their job, you will only get beat by better footballers. Usually.

sadly folks don't "over complicate it"

think about it: managers give specific instructions to 11 individuals to create a cohesive strategy. in order to convey this each player needs to know what they're expected to do. if you say something to them like "you're playing defense" you'd get innumerable interpretations of what that looks like. if you break it down by situation e.g. "when that happens do this" you begin to create roles. this approach allows for more specificity, structure and the shorthand becomes around "roles" and not "positions" although the latter doesn't lose it's usefulness either.

I doubt City particularly want shot of the multiple league winning keeper, but with their unlimited funds and world class super expensive team being the draw that it is, they can buy a bit better, possibly league and champions league winning keepers..
We however cannot and we are so far from a keeper of Harts quality that to not get him if it were even slightly possible would be an act of madness. I genuinely don't care about his form for England, his league form is really really impressive.

Just typed in premier league best keepers to google

Joe Hart first in the list

I can only assess him by what I've seen myself hence I believe he is nothing like as good as he was and it will be a risk putting him between our sticks. I find it strange that you dismiss his international form, pressure games bring mistakes and he has made plenty so they have to be included in any assessment. Can you imagine if he does another stupid cock up in say the derby game, pressure match, would you still feel the same way, I doubt it. Basically if RK wants him he'll go out of his way to get him unless of course he looks down his nose at us, that appears likely as he claims to want to play abroad which will leave me to have peace of mind.

I get it Ray, im old skool like you, give me a 4-4-2 with a number 6 and a number 8, big man little man up top and CBs that only KNOW to find row Z all day long, but you gotta move into the modern game Ray, move with me Ray.

You two dancing?

Hart obviously still thinks he's king of the world. He must have one of those brains which instantly forgets howlers, wnd must be perplexed why the phone hasn't stopped not ringing. If he came to us you can see he'd think he was doing us a massive favour. Let us leave him to his deluded downward slope

You're now very much under complicating it

Barry and Barkley are both centre midfielders, would you say they both have the same role?
