Strike ace eyes long-term Toffees stay

Last Updated: Fri, 16 Oct 2009 13:21

Loan striker Jo insists he does not regret leaving mega-bucks Manchester City and would like to stay at Everton for 'the long run'.

The 22-year-old Brazilian ace was initially farmed out to Everton in the second half of last season after failing to live up to the £18million price-tag City paid CSKA Moscow for his services in summer 2008. And, following a successful spell at Goodison Park, Toffees chief David Moyes took Jo back to Merseyside on loan for this season.

Jo moved to Everton just as City boss Mark Hughes was splashing out vast sums of money to try and turn the Eastlands outfit into a genuine contender for at least a top-four finish. However Jo insists he made the right move joining Everton and he would like to stay put when his loan expires.

"I plan to stay here for the long run," he told The Liverpool Echo.

"Since last season I have felt very, very happy here and very welcome.

"I have a lot of respect for Manchester City but I am playing for Everton at the moment."

He added: "I feel cared for by everybody here and that makes me very happy."

So...I know its a long season and he hasnt been that great but do you think we should keep him or wait till the end of the season and then judge? Will Moyes want him?

I do like the kid (he's only 22) and can be moulded. He doesnt look like he'll get you 20 goals a season, but he does look like he could be a Berbatov-esque player or a great link up player.

Would love to see him stay for several years but can Everton afford what Citeh will demand? Unless there's a sneaky throw-in on the Lescott transfer.

I dont think they'll want much for him to be fair. The owners didnt buy him, Shinawatra did (I think), so a good price could be sorted.

But knowing Everton something like £6-7million for him would cause us to choke and ask for £4mill. After all we'd say we've been paying his wages for a season and a half (if that's what we're doing).

I think Jo is a great player to have in Europe also.

Unless he really starts to turn it on it would be a lot of money for a squad player. He's always going to be third choice after Yak & Saha. He could give us a decent option from the bench, but the price would have to be right for Moyes to go for a permanent move. £5M ish?

With plenty of striker/link up options (Fellaini, Cahill, Vaughan, Anichebe) and plenty of defensive options, would we rather spend the money in midfield, or even on a new keeper?

But thats the thing....Yak is always 1st choice. And so is Saha but he's 31 and, while on fire now, probably hasnt got long left in his tank.

Vaughan...he's over. And Anichebe is in the same boat as Jo IMO but both completely different. Vic is a powerhouse, Jo is more technical and ghosts into positions.

Boost the midfield should be priority yes, but unless we didnt want pace up front, I'd take Jo if the prices right.

On the other hand I wouldnt cry if we did let him go.

The big factor is Jo's age. He's got plenty of time on his side to develop his style to suit the premiership, and I really hope he does well. As you say Saha may only give us another season, if that, and who really knows how old the Yak is - you can't trust Nigerian birth certificates.

So Jo could certainly be one for the future - at the right price.

Would like to keep him here. He's young, and we've seen glimpses of what he can do, although this season we're not seeing his best.

Only if the price is right mind.

it's kind of a catch 22 though, really... if he starts banging them in the price goes up, if he continues this lackluster vein of form do we want him?
