Last season, we saw many examples of managers berating refs and sometimes, I have to say, with just cause. The standard of refereeing is another issue which also needs addressing but last season we saw the following:
Sir Alex v Martin Atkinson
David Moyes v Mark Clattenburg
Liverpool, a few others and now Chelsea v Steve Bennett
I am sure there are many other examples of refs being castigated by clubs and then, as has been consistently shown of late, those refs being kept away from those clubs.
The clubs are virtually picking their own referees. The refs are scared to upset the big clubs as it affects their chances of getting the big games.
I say that on the opening day of next season, Atkinson should get Man United, Clattenburg should get Everton and Bennett should get Chelsea or Liverpool.
On every occasion that a manager openly criticises a referee, that referee should be appointed to that club’s next game.
A manager should also get a one match touchline ban. If the incident is repeated, the next time it should be two matches and the time after that four and so on and so forth.
