2025/26 James Tarkowski

It's fine.

Tarkowksi leads all Premier League outfield players since the start of 2022-23 for clearances, headed clearances, blocks and aerial duels won - ranking ahead of the likes of Arsenal's Gabriel and Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk in those metrics.

He's de facto captain and and a very reliable player. If he goes into his last season here as a back up option then it makes perfect sense for a club that is looking to invest in a squad.

You’re going to lead in all of those if you’re never stepping up the pitch which is where the issue is with him. He’s good at defending how he defends. We shouldn’t want to play that way and this season when we are not doing so as often he’s repeatedly been unable to handle it.

I don’t think people realize how few players are making it to the age this contract takes him to. Last season guys 34+ who played 1000+ minutes were Young (completely finished), Vardy (fine on an awful team) and Gueye. It’s just not realistic to expect him to be an exception when he’s already falling off.

Tarkowski signs new two-year contract extension

James Tarkowski has signed a two-year contract extension with Everton, keeping him at the club until the end of June 2028.

"I'm super excited and proud to be an Everton player and to continue this journey," Tarkowski told evertontv.

"It's been a crazy few years with some big lows and some massive highs. We've managed to get through those tough times and hopefully now we're on to more positive and exciting times ahead.

"I think the intention has been set out from the start of this season.

“I’ve loved every minute so far of working under the manager [David Moyes]. He has made it clear where we're going with this club. The results and performances have really improved in his time here and it does seem to be going in one direction.

"The reason I've signed is because I want to be a part of that. Now it's up to us as players to get on board and take us in that direction."
