2020/21 James Rodriguez

There has been a sense that English football has become more cosmopolitan and less parochial since the likes of Wenger and a stream of sophisticated continentals came to the Premier League and revolutionised the game. Yet, even today the old inward-looking contempt can be detected. Take James. This lad is world famous, a superstar footballer, yet many people were "unconvinced" by him when he signed for us. Now, if you've been paying attention over the last seven years or so, you'd know James was a magnificent footballer. The only question, really, is would he settle into the culture, the English way of life, and cope with the climate. As a player, he is elite. To listen to some, he was just a pretty face. In a handful of games, he has already installed himself as a leading light of the league. But then, why wouldn't he? He's a class above pretty much everyone in this division.

If he can settle into the environment, and has a bit of luck with injuries, we're going to be watching an all-time club legend. The early signs are spell-binding.
The rest of the world can say what they want , its based on ignorance and a fair bit of jealousy.
The only people it matters to are US , Carlo , and Everton football club.
Anyone with an inkling about football knows how good he is , his record and trophies speak for itself.
So it matter not what others think , only US.

I've loved De Bruyne ever since he was cutting up Bundesliga defences at Wolfsburg. He's a wonderful player, satisfyingly grumpy to boot. This idea that he has somehow achieved stuff that James hasn't is nonsense, however. How many Champions League titles does he have? Two less than our Colombian for starters. How many World Cup Golden Boots does he have? One less than our Latin American magician. Domestic titles? James has them in Germany and Spain. KDB failed at Chelsea and rebuilt his career in Germany. He has been magnificent at Manchester City in domestic competition, but his Champions League impact has been minimal. James sits very comfortably in his company and compares very well with him.

What James must do now is be consistent with Everton. That's his challenge. But would I swap him for the superb Kevin De Bruyne? Not for a moment.

I think he's far more talented than Kanchelskis. Andrei was a tank, a brilliant player with pace, power, and no little skill, but he had minimal impact internationally. He was poor in his one big international tournament, Euro 96, and was bombed out of Man United before he could do much in the Champions League. His star shone brightly but burned out very quickly.

I've been watching Everton since 1980. We've had some tremendous players in that time, but we've never had a player of this technical standard. Now, whether he puts his form together for a long period remains to be seen. It's all very well being gifted and visionary, but if you get pissed off when it gets cold and can't settle, well, then we might see him for only as long as we saw Kanchelskis.

I'm hopeful he will put his head down for two years and add a glorious chapter to his career, but it's not a given. He couldn't have started any better, however.

Best player in Blue since Kanchelskis?

Or even further back

Got to be between him and Ball in regard to our most naturally gifted (outfield) footballer ever. If we can get 3 more years of that I'm going to look like this:

Typically the body recovers from jet lag at a rate of 1/2 time zones per day. Columbia is 6 hours behind us so it should take about 3-5 days for him to recover. My guess is he’s going to feel it a bit still by the time the derby comes around. He’s probably used to it by now after the time he’s spent in Europe

Saying that it’s not that far behind that he couldn’t slip into his usual routine when he returns which will massively help his recovery
I agree that he’s used to it. James has played in Europe since 2010 with consistent call ups to the national team during that time. This type of travel and quick turnaround isn’t new to him. As far as covid, he was taken on a private flight to Colombia w/other europe based players and coaches. It’s all very controlled to the point where an opposing player from Venezuela was rejected entry into Colombia for failing to provide legit proof of covid testing.
