Remember John Stones loping off at the pit last year with upset tummy? Could you imagine McCarthy doing the same?

Ireland are entitled to do their own fitness check after FIFA changed the rules after every player at the likes of UTD got injured the day before heading off on international duty, Keane was a prime example actually admitting he doesn't play friendlies.

Everton's medical team said it would be high risk to play him

Ireland's medical team said the same thing

McCarthy chose to ignore them and declare himself fit. O'Neil played him as a result - he got injured, again, as a direct consequence.

McCarthy has chosen to do this and his club (who pay his wages) is suffering again as a result. It's entirely his decision but he can't realistically expect that we'll be happy to continue to let him do this. I respect his wanting to play, but it's ultimately irresponsible and I'm personally done with him here. He's taken a big risk with his health at an important time of the season and Everton will suffer because of it. Koeman won't stand for that, so I expect a parting of the ways in the summer and I can't say I'll be too disappointed. Shame in a way as I think his energy would suit Koeman and he'd be a useful player to keep, but we can't rely on him and it's now at the point where that unreliability is at least partly his own fault.

Davies is superior to him in almost every single respect. I think his emergence has probably made Koeman's mind up about a few players.

It's not fair to criticise him for taking a risk with his health for Ireland when he did the same for us under Martinez, he'd be a hypocrite to some decree. It's all about judgement calls, like I said the pivotal group game, Ireland already missing half the first choice midfield, he maybe felt the same personal obligation he did for Everton to play while injured.

I've no problem with people thinking he is no longer of sufficient quality for us but can't have them criticising him trying to play in such an important game for Ireland.

we pay his wages mate, we paid a fair amount of dollar for him so he's an asset to us. I'd say he's left himself wide open to be criticised by fans and more unfortunately for him, Koeman.
 
Think we've seen the last of him in an Everton shirt now. Great player few seasons ago but time for him to get fit and play elsewhere
 

I've defended this lad for well over a year now and he's just shown the club total disrespect in my opinion and been reckless with his own career. It's one thing being proud to play for your country, it's another to completely ignore the professionals and yourself to try and ridiculously prove you'd almost literally run over broken glass to play for your country.

He had a firm place in Ireland's squad regardless of that match, and Koeman backed him to try and break in to the first 11 at club level.

Yet he's taken a chance yet again and I won't defend him this time. Don't reckon he has much of a future at the club now. I do still rate him as a player when fit though.
 
I would expect we are already looking for someone to replace him.

Hence all the links to other midfielders after securing Schniederlin.

No doubting that a fully fit McCarthy is an asset, but we have not seen that for a few years now.

The whole messy and public spat with Ireland will not have endeared him to Koeman either, but I believe he is astute enough to realise the value of James when firing. Sadly this latest episode will see him moving on to a lesser team when the window opens.

Hopefully Kessie or someone of that ilk will take his squad place.

Two wrongs don't make a right mate. It's irresponsible for a professional footballer to take risks with their fitness. I would say the same if he did it for an Everton game. It's also irresponsible for a manager to take that risk with the player whether it be O'Neill for Ireland or Martinez for Everton.

The fact is we now have a manager who does things the right way, as we've seen with McCarthy consistently throughout this season and with Schneiderlin this week. He doesn't take a risk with players injuries and wouldn't ask a player to do the same. He asked that player not to take that risk with Ireland during this last break, and from what I understand the club, through our medical representatives, asked the republic management/medical team to do the same.

Both the Irish management team and the player decided to ignore that medical advice with the inevitable results, and our club now have to accept the consequences during a critical time in our season. I'm not saying McCarthy would have made a difference, but I'm fairly certain that had he been fit he would have started the next two games, whether or not Schneids was passed fit. To be without both of them makes the task that much harder and next week could see the end of our hopes of Champions league football, and with it, perhaps our last chance of holding in to Lukaku.

Personally I feel that both the Irish management team and the player himself have shown a lack of respect to Everton Football club. I can understand Irish people like yourself wanting him to represent your country in an important game, but I can't understand why you are prepared to condone him taking these sort of risks with his fitness. I'm English but I wouldn't be happy with Barkley taking such a risk playing for England. In fact I'd be as angry with him as I am with McCarthy.

And quite frankly, I'm getting pretty sick of people coming on here not just trying to defend McCarthy, but also having a pop at us none Irish Everton fans for actually having the audacity to criticise him.
 
Terrible this, however Everton and Ireland medical staff can come out blameless.

The player, and Ireland management entirely culpable.

The player at least you can understand him wanting to play cos he feels ok, the management going against the recommendations of EFC and Ireland medical staff is shocking.

Clearly wasnt fit, as the medical staff and his subsequent recurrent injury shows.

Koeman will get rid. JM usually good when he plays and is RK's type of player, but having someone for 15-20 games a year just isn't enough.
