James McCarthy

I hate this type of post. Are people supposed to pretend that he played brilliantly last night?

Are people supposed to write him off before he's even kicked a ball for us?
Trappatoni and Martinez's style, approach and thinking could not be further apart.
I often thought Evertonians understood football a little more than the normal football fan - maybe I do have blue-tinteds after all.

Any ball playing midfielder would have been anonymous in traps dinosaur tactics playing team. Wait until he's played a few games for us before judging him.

Who is writing him off?

Someone said the game passed McCarthy by, and it did by most accounts, are people supposed to give a different account than what actually happened?

You've either been otherwise engaged since we were first linked to him, or you haven't read the posts in all the transfer threads - it is FACT that some Everton fans have written the lad off. I didn't say you had, however, if the cap fits....

I was delighted we signed mccarthy based on one or two performances I've seen of him. I was less than delighted based on that performance I saw of him last night. He was so negative with the ball (pass back after pass back after pass sideways after lose the ball with a blind pass after pass back etc...), refused to show any demand for the ball when he was in space (in fact more often than not I saw him hide from the player on the ball... genuinely did not want it one bit!) and most of the time when he was free he pointed at another player on the pitch for the player on the ball to pass it to. Was so frustrating to watch and utterly uninspiring.... Hopefully that was the last we'll ever see of that kind of performance from McCarthy!

He´s played like that every time I´ve seen him mate. Stands in the the centre circle and points to to the fullback on the opposing wing form where the ball is. Or, he gets the ball and lays it off to the fullback himself.

Those are just tactical issues though. He´s young and he´s got massive potential. We´ll want to him to be a lot more adventurous during his Everton career.

If he played poorly yesterday then people should be allowed to say so. There's no point pretending, or accusing people of getting on his back just because they are telling the truth.

I will give him time, but it will be time where I hope he develops his game beyond passing the ball backwards all the time.

..direct feedback from Wigan backroom staff is that the lad is a top guy. Lives for footy, doesn't drink, doesn't gamble etc. I was more interested in how they rated him. Apparently everything is geared towards the team, he is focused on tactics and approach and has no problem making it known if somebody isn't pulling their weight. A really good pro and club man but we have to wait and see how good he is.

He put in a stereotypical passenger performance for Ireland the other day, but the tactics were grim so it'd be unfair to judge him overall.

The problem is that I've seen him put in similar anonymous performances for Wigan too. The hope is that he'll be more consistent and step up in a higher calibre team, but there's a definite real danger that we've just spunked away £13m on the new Mark Pembridge.

People where calling for Felli's head after the first couple of games, he's useless, the game passes him by, he's not technical etc etc.

Its wrong to judge McCarthy off the game last night, in fact nobody as really seen enough to justify a proper opinion of him. He's not going to be the creator, the driving force etc, he'll be the engine.

As long as he does what RM wants him to do, and he's effective doing it, then that should be enough for all of us
