James McCarthy

Wrong way around.

Broke it playing for the Republic, which meant he hardly ever played for us.

Got hurt for us first mate, got brought back too soon by Martinez and then got stuck in a tug of war between O'Neill and Koeman

Had those two been able to swallow their mutual pride and come to some sort of agreement, then Ireland might have stopped picking him and he wouldn't have been compelled to keep turning up. Players get slaughtered all the time for shirking international duty, he was put in a tough position and the two managers stuck him there

He always got far too much stick for that situation IMO. It was the people above him who needed to sort their ship out and stop using him as a chess piece in a pointless organ measuring contest (That's some quality non-swearing)

Do people seriously forget how he dropped off towards the end of his first season? Then tried to force through a move to Spurs? People moaned about Gana who was a far superior player not being able to move the ball forward but seem to think this guy could?

He wasn’t a brilliant player in the slightest and the best business we could’ve done was to take the £26m Spurs offered after that first season.

Very well said.

I for one am glad to see McCarthorse gone. It's just a shame that he's thieved several years' wages in the interim.

Never wanted him to join, never rated him, and he'd actively sought to leave for years. Ironically at Palace a few years ago he was sent off for two bookable offences and to many of us there that day he appeared to actively seek the 2nd yellow with a series of poor challenges.
Not the worst of many Martinez flops, but still a poor signing.
Im surprised that isn’t more widely known but it is definitely true. He was tentatively approached by Spurs in 2015 and immediately tried to jump but they changed their mind. If that was reported in the media at the time I missed it but it was going on behind the scenes.

He was exceptional in a basic role in his first year but just not to be. Ruined by injury.
