2025/26 James Garner

I don't see him getting in the England squad unless there are a number of injuries. The likes of Rice, Anderson and Wharton are all well ahead of him and rightly so.

The fact that Wharton is unable to get in tells you the state of Tuchel having his favourites as well.

….Garner is short on that quality but he has versatility and a player of that type is vital, particularly in tournament football where he can do a job in a number of positions.

Garner is a good solid footballer who can play in several positions. I think he is best as a centre mid, but, the way things are at the moment, I think he is best used as a right back until January. O'Brien has been sussed as a full back and teams are starting to overload their left side to pressure him. He is a decent player, but, he should be played as centre back. Once Branthwaite is fit I'd go with him and O'Brien as our centre back pair, their pace and comfort on the ball would allow us to play a much higher line.

For the most part he’s gone under the radar - certainly outside of the club - but I think he’s been outstanding this season . Number 2 in Player of the Season so far after Grealish for me.

I’m undecided in the ‘should he move to RB’ debate, but we certainly looked miles better on Sunday when he played there so it’s definitely a good option for us to have.

I know he keeps mentioning the England squad and so does Moyes but I just can’t see it. Every player in the prem now seems to think if they have a few good weeks of form they should play for their country. I like Garner and he’s playing well but there’s a lot of players ahead of him. Wharton isn’t even getting picked and he’s a lot better than Garner.

Garner is playing very well but I wish Moyes would not go on about Engalnd, there's no point in getting the lad's hopes up

the midfield spots are contended by some of the very best in the world in the likes of Rice, Bellingham and Palmer

then you have some serious talent who will be touch and go on getting in the squad like Wharton, Morgan Rodgers, Morgan Gibbs White, Elliot Anderson

then factor in players who are a bit off the boil but are absolutely of a higher quality like Mainoo

throw in players who are playing regular champions league football like Conor Gallagher

throw in players who have caps/been in squads already and play at higher level teams and in europe like Curtis Jones, Reuben Loftus Cheek and Angel Gomes

throw in the unflushable Jordan Henderson

he could have the season of his life. he is not getting picked

he'd be better off finding out if he has any celtic heritage

I think he would be getting picked under a lot of managers as the utility pick tbh, not saying he would get loads of game but he is comfortable in a variety of roles which would suit a tournament scenario. Tuchel however is being really odd with some of his picks, its very Chelsea orientated, very experience based, he is going for the tried and tested/players he knows route. Foden/Bellingham/Wharton and others being left out for the likes of RLC and Henderson atm is just backwards imo.

with a 26 man squad is the versatile pick even needed anymore?

I don't really think putting our best CM at RB, unless through necessity, is really all that smart.

Glad to hear he's getting a new deal. Was thinking he may be looking at leaving for free next summer. Don't think he's champions league level but deffo good enough for a team in Europa spots.

….it really depends on what a ‘top team’ wants. Managers love a player who has versatility to play effectively in a number of roles. I’m old enough to remember Sandy Brown, Alan Harper and the hugely underrated Kevin Richardson playing pivotal roles in our title winning teams.

I have to try and keep away from this thread to stop myself from responding too much on what people dont want to hear..

Garner is my man, so for the love of my sanity and being able to happily enter this thread..

Moyes - Angus - Friedkins - please get us a bloody RB in January so this talk can stop...
