2025/26 James Garner

Yes I was there seen it clear as day. Our midfield as a whole yes. But singling out Garner as our “whole midfield” no.

He was our best player and for me, he's the one who is 7/10 every game with the occasional 8/10. Mr reliable.

It's like when Ferguson had Keane with Butt alongside him. Keane added the stardust while Butt was the dependable player who would not let them down.

Garner is our version of Butt and he is lacking that star quality partner with Moyes pushing KDH into a 10 role.

I think he’s proper middle of the road premier league (which in the scheme of things is excellent).

Criminally underrated is a big overstatement of his abilities though.

He got shown up today by proper quality premier league central midfielders. He’s a good all rounder but we’re his level (where we are/have been - not where we’d like to be!).
I don't think I have so much drivel on here ,he was shown up because Tim didn't play (well he was on the pitch ) and they have more players in midfield than we did ,Gana was missed so much it was frightening ,he musy bring Harrison back as I thought Tim would rise to the occasion sadly he didn't .

He’s not top level quality.

Good player Jimmy, Jack of all trades but nowhere near top class.

They had three who played who were, by comparison. Forget his partner for a second and focus on his game - he was poor himself. Bypassed too easily (albeit by strong physical players) and didn’t protect our defence nearly enough.

Who would play midfield in December?

I don't agree Kev he was left bare with no support from his midfield partner ,it is impossible to be a one man midfield when KDH was so far forward ,I do believe he can be our Bracewell or Colin Harvey who never scored many at all.

I like him and I do rate him, especially for where we currently are. I just think the shouts currently have gone overboard.

I was very disappointed with Garner yesterday. He and Tim were largely passengers. This is not uncommon for Tim, due to his inconsistency, but It is uncommon for Jimmy. I kept thinking he must be carrying an injury he seemed almost disinterested at times? I do like him but yesterday he needed either taking off when we went 2-0 down (along with Tim) of moving to right back.

Just up against a top quality midfield and it showed.

Who the heck would have replaced them ? Not that I agree at all.

Some player him. Even legs like Joelinton would elevate our midfield massively.

Can’t believe they had Tonali on the bench to come on as well. Some base they have there.

Tonali Guimaraes Joelinton is great midfield full of technique pace power and goal threat. Howe is brave enough as well to put Tonali deep by himself as a ball playing 6 and let the other two drive forward.

Everton managers cannot move away from putting two slow plodders in the middle and having another slow number 10 chasing shadows ahead of them, and then we wonder why we don’t ever have possession of the ball.

Despite the 4-1 drubbing, Garner was impressive. Per Sofascore, the midfielder completed 84 of his 87 passes, reaching a 97 percent completion rate against a strong Newcastle midfield three of Lewis Miley, Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton.

50 of those were in the Newcastle half, showing good progression going forwards despite Everton’s lack of impetus in the final third.

Although he only had one shot in the game which went wide, it was also Garner’s tackling success that was impressive. The former Manchester United man won one of his two tackles, made four recoveries, and crucially won all four of his ground duels, showing a complete nature in the midfield.

Well, well, well.

I’m sure Tonali didn’t start
