At £17mil and 23 I'd expect him to at least be 3rd choice and being rotated in.
He appears to be 4th choice even behind Keane. For that, we could have loaned someone and used the money elsewhere -- or spent it on a teenager with massive potential.
At this rate we'll have a 24 year old backup end of the season who we will not be able to shift.
I wonder if we will try and move him on in Jan.
I don't think any of this changes what I said. Of course, he could turn out to be terrible, but I prefer to be optimistic. As I said, I'm sure he'll be striving to improve, and he's a young 23 in terms of exposure and experience.
As for spending the money elsewhere. I can see that argument, it does seem a strange move, but then centre back is a very specialist position, and outside of Keane,
Tarkowski and
Branthwaite, our other options would have been Coleman and
Mykolenko. You can see the myriad potential issues there I'm sure... I also feel it's no coincidence that the Gnonto thing went quiet after TFG 'pulled out.' I reckon we were confident of getting others in before that, or certainly the manager was led to believe there was more money. Either that or Kev just went over his head.
