But by that logic it'd mean that if Branners was gone, the plan was to play Tarkowski and Keane, which is just a sad thought.

Feel bad for him. He's gone from being a starter at a good club and in a league where he can develop his game, probably enough that he becomes an established International and instead he's sitting on the bench each week.

His competition for the international spot is a bunch of players from League 1/2 and Nathan Collins mate - the standard for establishing himself is nonexistent. Lad just needs to play.

Not saying it's the best but it's not League 1/2 and he won't be any closer sat on our bench. He'd have had a good chance if he was playing each week.
