Ah the old shouts that he should have been a centre half. Despite no manager ever (and he’s had loads) trusting him to play there.

Mainly because he lacked every single quality required for a centre half:

Strength
Attacking the ball
Reading the game
Positioning
Tenacity
Concentration
Confidence

He was composed on the ball and athletic, qualities that look good at 17, but without some of the above, are absolutely pointless.

Really feel sorry for him, don't understand why anyone has delighted in quite frankly how rubbish his career has gone.

Signed a long-term contract and was then pushed at the door by the club and was promised the world by Man City who looked set to dominate at the time. The complete opposite of Barkley who has screwed us over big time to go sit on Chelsea's bench.

Have never wanted him back, he's never looked a player worth having for any top half side but he should be welcome if he ever wants to come back as a fan. Is apparently a very level headed lad who's never been a dirty or greedy player. Hope it somehow can work out for him somewhere now.

Fully respect your opinion in the face of sheer bitterness from the majority.

Don't get the hate here. Never pushed for the move from what I remember. They come in and we accepted so keft

It's a shame because he obviously had talent but being on £70k a week for doing zero obly much sympathy you can have

Honestly haven’t seen any hate for him at all. People just saying he wasn’t really that good and god knows what City were thinking.

No malice towards him. If you want to see hate towards him you need the Sunderland forum.

Frankly I’m surprised more players don’t go this way.

Young lads with ££millions thrown at them & surrounded by people kissing their ar5e.

You either have motivation & drive in your makeup or you don’t. £50K A WEEK whether you play or not isn’t the best motivator.
Not limited to Football. Tennis player Bernard Tomic missed out on the Oz Open via qualifying & pretty much said he didn't care as he'd just go home & count his millions!
Drained after the taxing loss, Tomic sarcastically responded to journalists asking him where he’d go from the loss.

“I just count money, that’s all I do. I count my millions,” he said.

“You go do what I did (on court). Bye bye.”

This bloke is what’s wrong with football

Sitting off doing the bare minimum to get his wedge - turn up at the training ground and go into the gym and go home

Refuses to play and doesn’t want to be a footballer anymore - but happy to collect the footballer wages

Absolute bell I’m embarrassed he came from our academy

By the sounds of it, Sunderland want him to agree to tear up his contract and negotiate a cheaper way out for them.

If S'land didn't put a pay cut relegation clause in his contract, I can't say I blame the lad for not thinking that tearing up his contract is a great idea, I'd probably do the same myself. If he gets an offer from another club, even at a reduced wage, then that'd be a difference scenario, but I'd imagine S'land are going to have to take the hit and cough up something to get him off their books one way or t'other.

Talented lad, made of glass etc etc

Footballs version of Aussie tennis player Tomic who lost in qualifying for the Aussie Open last week and said he didn't care as he can go home and count his millions.

It’s not just that though he’s happily pocketing the wages and actively refusing to play or join the first team

He’s literally turning up (when not feigning injuries) to the club gym by himself and going home so as to not be in breach of contract and not get paid

He’s watched staff at the club get made redundant and all the cuts and slashes taking place there and asks to leave - no one would buy him so if he wants out that’s probably the only chance of going he has

100% agree, decent on the ball but would never made a CB, no aggresion and minimal heading ability. Imagine a player like Costa lined up against him?

Everything that is wrong with football today , a teenager show a glimpse of talent , gets millions throw at him and after a few years everyone realises he has been crap all along at football and has no heart or desire, will be making deliveries for Dominoes in the next life.
