To be honest there was nothing new in the documentary that isn't available elsewhere. If I get a chance later on I'll try and list some of the stuff they sourced so you can check it out.

This was far more about politics than sport by the way.
I remember watching a heysel doc as a kid. It was prob panorama, world in action kind of special in the 1980s. They were tracking down hooligans caught on camera and door stepping them unprepared. Would love to know what documentary that was and whether it’s on YouTube.

Anyone watching this?

They just talked about Heysel. Liverpool fan on there said if the stadium had been in good repair the 39 fans wouldn't have died.

They really have no shame and are utterly abhorrent fans!!
It's true though.

In the same way that if Ukraine had surrendered on day one, thousands of them wouldn't have died.

Requiem for a cup final is very good too I can recommend that.

YT used to have most of the broadcast footage of the delayed match as well: with the pundits / commentators speculating about why they've just seen what they've seen, it's bizarre.

Brussels, Belgium, 1985. Liverpool are contesting their fifth European Cup Final in just nine seasons. But what starts out as the usual care-free continental trip for Chris Rowland and his friends ends up as the darkest night of their lives. A wall in a decrepit stadium collapses, and as a result 39 Juventus fans lay dying.
From Where i Was standing starts out as an amusing account of the build-up to the final –– an experienced group of eight travelling Reds enjoying the delights of yet another big European occasion –– before the mood in Brussels turns increasingly dark, and tragedy ensues.
What follows is an honest, personal account of what took place inside the stadium that night; one which sets the record straight about an event that tarred all Liverpool fans with the same brush. It concludes with an examination of the aftermath: the world’s reaction (including shocking hostility aimed towards those simply there to watch a match), the official inquests (which apportioned blame far beyond those culpable Liverpool fans), and the punishment meted out to those held responsible.

Utter 'kin scum.

They can gtf with their demands about dropping the 'always the victims' chants until they at the very least they as a club and fanbase own that mass murder.

As soon as Evans' kipper appeared i knew it'd be a case of a 'the stadium wasn't fit for purpose' angle, even though he himself said fans were "going mad and trying to rip the fences down". It may not have been ideal, but it still held a European final a few years before (Arsenal-Valencia) and remained in-tact, hence why it was approved for that match.
By all accounts there was a nasty atmosphere in Brussels earlier that evening. A certain element of their support were in a very violent mood.

So while yes the stadium wasn't fit for purpose, a substantial element of rs fans were out to cause trouble that evening. Another excuse is that they were atacked first, but as far as i'm aware the Juventus ultras were located in a different part of the ground

The Juventus fans that did get caught up in it didn't want any trouble at all. This is a tragedy that seems to have been whitewashed and written out of history.

I don't think a surrender to Russia is a viable option really. I hope you're being ironic there! As bad as that stadium was, if the RS fans were behaving themselves then no one would have been killed.

They wouldn't even listen to Joe Fagans desperate appeals for them to stop. He was a broken man after that night. He deserved better than that. The families of the Juventus fans who lost their lives, who were treated with total and utter contempt by that club deserved better as well.

Really was a wtf moment, that night.
Anarchy?
Plod certainly earned their ot that night
Celebrating hooliganism one minute, wasn’t out fault the next.

If you watch requiem for a cup final - a fairly balanced view point - it specifically says that the majority of the 39 died through the crush and suffocation prior to the wall collapsing. The wall giving way apparently eased the pressure.

Coildnt believe that according chief investigator on the case.
Bill Sergeant Then: Detective Chief Inspector, Merseyside police, 46

27 arrests on suspicion of manslaughter.
“To my knowledge, not a single person ever served his sentence.”

A report from the old days when reporters weren't petrified of having Kopites handing them and their families death threats for mentioning Heysel.

You wont see it now. Too busy bending over for them and their campaign to close the truth down - AKA end the use of the word 'victims'.

Yes, I was being ironic. It is ridiculous to blame Ukraine for what is currently happening, the same as it is ridiculous to blame the stadium for what happened in 85

Aye, even Evans says the fans were up for a rumble, but gives it the 'revenge for 84 spiel' that gets doled out a lot. The stadium was still used after this- for internationals and European Cup ties, etc, so it was still deemed fit to hold big games. For example, one of my favourite ever headers happened there a year or so later (during Ireland's great run to the finals of the Euros in 88).

Halfway through 2/3 this evenings. Undercover police explains 'pretending to be something your not is the sneakiest snidiest thing you can do, but we had to stop these villains...'

Imagine if they'd been greenpeace or the no nukes brigade and you'd got one or more up the duff...
