Is our style backfiring?

Can Martinez fix our defence to allow his style to be a success?

Not every time no, theres some crosses that Keepers simply cannot come out for due to the whip and pace, however, how many times has an opponent whipped in a ball with pace? Every time we concede from a cross or set piece the balls floated in and if we had a commanding Goalkeeper he'll make it his 9/10 at the very least.

Whilst Howard wasn't directly to blame for that goal on Saturday or Monday, i still think he puts the shits up the defence and they drop back a few yards to try and cover the flappy fart we have in goal.

I'm not sure what's going on here during training.

Congratulations for playing on my use of wording, where I think you knew my intention was suggesting a clean sheet ensures you cannot lose.

The issue is that it is appears as if we do not aim for a clean sheet, as highlighted by Martinez declaring that he's not bothered if we concede first.

Far too little emphasis on defensive responsibilities and more on simply out scoring others by Martinez and other managers.

Even the likes of McManaman were heralding this principle yesterday on BT Sport. No wonder so many ridiculous results are occurring this season.
The point is, you can't play that way if you're dodgy on set pieces, because a team that plays that defensively minded is going to spend a lot of time camped in their own end and concede a lot of set piece opportunities. Tony Pulis squads give up set pieces by the bucketfuls, but they don't mind because there are always about six giants back in their penalty area heading them all away. We can't play that way.

Ironically, I think we'd give up fewer goals if we were more attack-minded. We don't give up too many from open play; the problem is we concede so many corners and free kicks (as many corners per match as Sunderland and Watford). We hardly ever give up goals on the counter, though, so we should really be pushing the play further into the opposition's half. The problems come when we start sitting back a little, especially if we've taken a slim lead. Then we start conceding corner after corner, and we're just not strong enough at defending them.

Roberto Martinez insists he "couldn't care less" if Everton concede the first goal of any game - just as long as they fight back to win.

Nothing wrong in that. All he is saying is as long as we win then he couldn't care less if we conceded the first goal. I would take that wouldn't you?

For me it's a BS thing to say when you turn around and claim, as he does, that scoring a goal is the hardest thing to do in football. So, yeah...go screw yourself by conceding and then have to do "the hardest thing in football" TWICE to win the game. I get his gist but it's a bit ridiculous and way too lackadaisical.

It's been a frustrating couple of weeks for us blues, but at the same time our football has been the best we've played for a long, long time.

Our issue over the past few years has been breaking teams down and creating chances - how many times have people posted on this forum saying that we need someone to "unlock defences"?

This season we've been seemingly making matches open on purpose to try and stop teams from parking the bus, and although this has allowed us to score more it's also meant that the other team is allowed into the match more.

This wouldn't be an issue if our defending was better, but teams know that we struggle against crosses and set pieces - making us vulnerable and thus making our open style backfire.

An ESPN article raised many concerns that we knew of with our ability to defend, and we concede so many goals from set pieces that our team's confidence must hit the floor whenever the other team gets one.

I'm just interested to know whether fans believe that Martinez can solve our issues in defence. If he can, then we're onto a winner with the way that we play football. If not, it's going to be a long couple of seasons as players won't stay if we can't compete with the top end of the table.

No.

Our ability to head/catch a ball is which I'm pretty sure isn't on purpose under the managers instructions.

Think we just lack the collective ballsack to put these games away - bit of a fact of life with a young team. Jagielka defo is a difference maker here - he's not the most commanding in the air, or the most demonstrative shouty individual - but he knows the position like the back of his hand. No way do we draw the last five games or whatever with him in the side.

Jagielka is also reasonably fast is he not? Was surprised at how slow Stones and Mori were at times in the Palace game - running back like a pair of piano removal men. Don't even know if this is a big deal in the modern game, where all full backs can shift and provide cover - and it's not like we're being done on the counter in recent games.
