Is our style backfiring?

Can Martinez fix our defence to allow his style to be a success?

Your front line is your first line of defence. The lack of movement and pressing from our forwards contributes to their pressing game more so than our game as a whole. We lose the ball and take an age to get it back. Then we take all bleedin' day getting it up front again where it becomes all to congested and we're relying on a lucky bounce or a rebound.

Not good enough imo.
Amazing how only two teams have scored more goals than we have, then. Yes, we've clearly been incredibly lucky when it comes to scoring.

....not sure who it is but apparently we have a defensive coach. It's clear we don't work on set pieces. Our strongest headers should mark theirs, not Coleman or Barry. Running alongside means they are attacking the ball whereas we are virtually jumping from a standing start. basic stuff. Teams must loving playing against us, we are real suckers in both penalty areas.

It's been a frustrating couple of weeks for us blues, but at the same time our football has been the best we've played for a long, long time.

Our issue over the past few years has been breaking teams down and creating chances - how many times have people posted on this forum saying that we need someone to "unlock defences"?

This season we've been seemingly making matches open on purpose to try and stop teams from parking the bus, and although this has allowed us to score more it's also meant that the other team is allowed into the match more.

This wouldn't be an issue if our defending was better, but teams know that we struggle against crosses and set pieces - making us vulnerable and thus making our open style backfire.

An ESPN article raised many concerns that we knew of with our ability to defend, and we concede so many goals from set pieces that our team's confidence must hit the floor whenever the other team gets one.

I'm just interested to know whether fans believe that Martinez can solve our issues in defence. If he can, then we're onto a winner with the way that we play football. If not, it's going to be a long couple of seasons as players won't stay if we can't compete with the top end of the table.

I wouldn't say we are unlocking defences at all, we are just playing great counter attacking football and have Del on the wing who can pick a pass/cross for Rom, without Del this season we would be hovering around the relegation zone, if he picks up an injury for a couple of months we will be f+#*"d

You'd hope it was just rhetoric aimed at appeasing some aspects of the fans who are concerned about our frailties, but I fear it may not be.

There was a comment last season from Martinez which edged towards the sentiment of being more interested in style over substance.

In essence how you get the result over actually getting it. Now we're scoring first regularly, but seem almost accepting that we'll concede.

If you aim for a clean sheet you cannot lose a game... fact. Too many teams these days seem to simply ignore this and aim purely on goals.

Partly. But it's not that we're conceding which is concerning, because every team concedes. It's the manner in which we concede, because more often than not, it's a general calamity. That goal yesterday was a case in point, as was the goal on Monday.

In the first half yesterday we did exactly the opposite of that. We hassled and harried their defence and got on top of them. Our problem was that in the second half we let them get on top of us and reverted to a slower style.

That's the problem - reaching that level of consistency. And I think it's down in part to having such a young side. That's when we need the older heads to step up. Barry has been superb at that this season, but Howard has been dreadful at it and he doesn't organise his defence.

No, if you get a clean sheet you can't lose. If you aim for a clean sheet, you've got a really good chance of conceding a goal or two, especially if you're as crap at defending set pieces as we are. If just aiming for a clean sheet were good enough, Tony Pulis would never have lost a match in his managerial career.

Congratulations for playing on my use of wording, where I think you knew my intention was suggesting a clean sheet ensures you cannot lose.

The issue is that it is appears as if we do not aim for a clean sheet, as highlighted by Martinez declaring that he's not bothered if we concede first.

Far too little emphasis on defensive responsibilities and more on simply out scoring others by Martinez and other managers.

Even the likes of McManaman were heralding this principle yesterday on BT Sport. No wonder so many ridiculous results are occurring this season.

We aren't scoring enough goals regularly to do this. 6 against Sunderland and 4 against Villa is great, but if we really are going to play the way we did when we came 5th we need to be scoring at least 3 every week and I'm not sure we're capable of that.

Im enjoying our football at the moment, we not the worst defensive team in this league. We have alot of young players in this team and its shows, del and Barkley are not consistent enough. Lukaku is better but he had more years then these two and stones is a freak of nature but needs to work on his heading.

We also had one of our key players out like baines and jags. We are not perfect and will lose games and draw and win.

I think if this post doesn't qualify, then nothing else will :p

There used to be a factory in Clonmel in the 80s and 90s that employed a lot of local young unskilled labour. They used to proudly announce that they were working in the "Scheisser" factory. Of course, the name of the factory was in fact Schiesser.

However, "out of the mouths..." .the product of the factory was underwear !!! :p
