Is our style backfiring?

Can Martinez fix our defence to allow his style to be a success?

I'm no expert on football but what type of marking are we doing at corners, zonal or man
A combination of both from what I can tell. They seem to half-heartedly take a man, but then concentrate on an area which leaves people free.

Due to that, far too often the opposition are able to get away from a man and into free space within the six yard box.

I'm also perplexed why Rom isn't told to come back for corners. He's big and can head the ball so put him the box; Arsenal do it with Giroud.

Yep, and leave del out of the area.

We lack commanding defensive players generally...in fact I can't think of any. That's not to say they're not good players or defenders/keepers but none of them are 'clear everyone out, this ball is mine' type (in the case of Stones and Galloway - yet). That's the type of steel we need to improve defensively.

we have a manager who gets us to play 45 out of every 90 we have gathered 70 points from the last 162 avaliable, we have the best squad we have had to his credit, which will inevitably be dismantled one or two at a time, we may replace, but who would you replace Lukaku with? We supposedly had a tough start, although the majority of our home games were against 'top teams' we now have to go to their places in the 2nd half of the season. People go on about the '7th placed trophy' to me where you finish is not the aim, the aim is not to have weekend after weekend ruined by Everton, if that doesn't happen we may just claim the 6th or 7th placed trophy which would just be a bonus. People are talking about cup runs, we have had an easy one and now the test comes in the SF although we have had a really kind draw and the only PL team we faced took us to 120 minutes in a game where this supposed scintillating football was absent. Just like it was in the the 2nd half V Bournemouth and Norwich.

But the question is whether our style is backfiring. It clearly isn't, since the biggest problem we've had this season is getting too many draws, and our style really shouldn't be conducive to draws. If you want to argue the things that we could be doing better, that's fine, but it's also a different discussion.

Exactly. It's like Martinez now priorities the potential of catching our opposition on the break and scoring rather than actually defending.

The problem is that this doesn't work if they score which they're doing far too frequently. Rom back and Delboy forward gives a fine balance.

Last season we would defend corners with every man, which I obviously do not want. But where's the correct balance? Defensively he's naive.

We were sussed out last season at spurts. We visibly wilted when they pressed us, and that was the season over because everyone got onto it.

While we're not losing as many this season, it's plain as the nose on your face that we're too easily sussed. My fear is, is that it won't be long before they cotton onto our game from the kick-off.

Then we're in schiesse-strasse.

But no team is particularly good at playing against a high-pressing team - that's why Leicester are where they are. What has cost us this season has been our dreadful defending (goalkeeping) from crosses and set-pieces.

Jagielka coming back will help.

We need some big grock at the back to just smash everything away (in certain situations of course). We are far too vulnerable from balls in the air.

Jagielka is not that guy. He's a great defender, don't get me wrong, but headers are the weakest part of his game.

Your front line is your first line of defence. The lack of movement and pressing from our forwards contributes to their pressing game more so than our game as a whole. We lose the ball and take an age to get it back. Then we take all bleedin' day getting it up front again where it becomes all to congested and we're relying on a lucky bounce or a rebound.

Not good enough imo.

I'm all for Howard being replaced, but I think a lot of the set piece goals get blamed on him when really the individual marking hasn't been good enough. The test for me will be when jags comes back. If we stop shipping silly set piece goals, then I'll be minded to believe that it has just been that lack of experience at the back.

But that said, that doesn't explain on its own why we are capitulating every game - as well as we played first half yesterday I knew they were going to come back at us second half despite being non-existent.

I can only think of 3 players that can win a headed ball and that is Stones (who is still on a learning curve defensively), Mori (He is OK but not brilliant) and Lukaku (who is also not brilliant). When we concede a corner we are very much outnumbered by nearly all teams so are at a disadvantage straight away. This is where we need a strong and brave keeper to try and equalise that disadvantage or the only other way is to get bigger players that can also play good football and we know that will be very hard or expensive to come by. Even Jags is not brilliant in the air but he has that little bit more nous than the others. All our midfielders are poor at heading so they are not a great help in defending corners or set pieces.
Agree with this 100% we don't have natural great header winners at the back, will Martinez change this ? no way, because his next job as a coach of one of spains/ europes big clubs will come due to his teams ability to play NICE!! football. No Shawcross types in our side unfortunately.
