Now that we've had time to reflect on the summer dealings I thought I would have a look at what the net spend facts came out as, to try and give a fair assessment. Using the figures from this site:

https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/eve...29/plus/0?saison_id=2017&pos=&detailpos=&w_s=

Since Moshiri arrived at the club in Feb 2016 we have spent a total of just under £220m. The money we earned back in sales has been £151m and the total 'net spend' in that time is £68.3m. Since the January transfer window we have spent £170m and got back £101m from sales giving a net spend of just under £70m. And since the Summer we have spent £142m, with just under £97m from sales giving a net spend of just under £46m.

Obviously that doesn't tell the full picture and in the interest of fairness, if the Barkley sale had gone through, then you can add £35m to each of those sales figures which would bring the net spend down to £33.3m overall, £34.6m since January and over the summer just £10.7m. I think what this tells us is that those who claimed that we had broke even since Moshiri's arrival were simply wrong. However, the figures also highlight that we do not have money to burn and we still have to tread carefully with transfers. Given that Moshiri has a personal wealth of just around £1.5bn, compared to Sheikh Mansours £20bn, those expecting us to spend in the manner of Man City are deluding themselves.

What Moshiri has done since he has come in is to have a long term plan both on and off the pitch which includes getting us a new stadium, focusing on youth development, and distributing extra funds for wages and to pay off other things such as the interest free loan, bringing in Koeman and getting rid of Martinez. All of this money is not accounted for when looking at net spend and therefore to make out we are no further on now we have Moshiri instead of just Kenwright seems very short sighted and unfair. Having said that, the net spend figures don't exactly scream out that we are now able to compete with the likes of Man City and Chelsea either and despite the TV money being available, it's clear that Moshiri is having to manage the finances in a sensible manner and still cannot bankroll us in to the top 4 like Sheikh Mansour or Roman Abramovic did.

The fact that we didn't bring in a suitable striker after selling Lukaku, yet spent £40m+ on Sigurdsson suggests to me a fault with the transfer dealings by Koeman and Walsh rather than Moshiri. Moshiri provided the funds to spend £40m on a single player and Koeman and Walsh chose to spend it on a player in a position we had suitable cover for already.

Good post

But to me he can spend whatever he likes but it's a waste of money now as we didn't get a striker. Big mistake. Struggle to even finish top 7. Last year we were 7th with Rom. We look weaker in my eyes

If you think we might struggle to finish top 7 who are the teams who you think might come above us? can you make a list of 7 sides and say with any certainty they should be above us.

...this is similar to the 'rate the window' and 'same old Everton' threads We no longer have a hand to mouth existence but we still have a restriction on spend. We are not a Man City, we are not PSG so we can't buy who we want when we want. We now pay big salaries, we now have a bigger transfer fund as well as using what comes in on sales.

We are much better off now.

Quite.

What some seem to forget, those who think he will just write cheques out, is that he has facilitated a situation which has enabled ^^^^. Bigger sponsors, better credit lines, etc etc.

Not a chance he will personally buy players, but he has made their purchase and salaries within a reach we now see.

I think we will spend in January on a front man, the squad is a lot stronger and I hope Koeman plays Lookman more, he looks fantastic
when he has played, remember when Lukaku tried to `steal` his goal ...... the snake ............

To me I think the error was buying more midfielders before we concentrated on a striker. I can understand Koeman wanted Siggurdson, but we should have prioritised a striker in the £30m to £50m price bracket.

Think that's pretty obvious, but the assumption is that we didn't have the money to do so. Not sure that's the case, but it might be.

However, even if we are willing to go with 40-50M in net spend, we still could sell Mori, McCarthy, Ross, Robles, and Lennon for 80-90M. Add on 45-50M on that, and I would think that could buy you some pretty good players, including ones for the future.

We have a pragmatic billionaire owne,r we've missed the boat as far as the throw money at anything owners go.That was City, PSG,Chelsea (though they are now being run on a far more business type footing) but when the bubble bursts we may find ourselves in the driving seat.

i think some have an unreal expectation as to what money Moshiri will put in to the club. He has cleared the debt he has sorted us a better sponsor and he will sort out the finance for the stadium but he isnt going to be giving the manager 100s of millions to spend. This is a long term project (note focus on the youth team).

... and Niasse at £10m, and this was before Vlasic came in at £8m.

The 'theoretical' net spend if Barkley and Niasee hadn't gone wrong is approx. £30m over two seasons - not even enough to cover the increased TV money.

He has not invested. He has used an overdraft without meaning to.

We'll finish 7th. There are 6 teams a lot better than us and 13 teams a lot worse. Same as last season.

If we had a genuine Lukaku replacement in the mix with the new signings in midfield, and also another defender as Koeman wanted, we'd stand some chance of pushing for top 6.

And that's all it is. Pointless to even talk about.

The net spend is £70m over two seasons, it is what it is.
