Is Messi the greatest player ever?

Cryuf will always be the best for me

Cruyf
Stanley Matthews
Pele
Messi
Christiano Ronaldo
Puskas
Maradonna (Don't like him, but he was good. Can't be the best ever though due to his cheating)
Van Basten
Beckenbauer
Dino Zoff

That would be my top 10 in no particular order

I don't think we'll properly appreciate how good this lad was until he hangs up his boots.

That 2nd goal against Madrid in the 2011 Champions League SF still makes me jizz.

Oh, I agree.

I'm musing on what a waste of time it is to try and rank footballers. It's a silly exercise.

I do think coaching has a huge influence though. A manager like Moyes/Pulis/Allerdyce would not have behooved the creative geniuses that normally make up the 'best of all time' lists. And those creative types need managers that allow them to express themselves rather than attempt to stifle their natural gifts for the sake of workrate. Beyond that, every player brings different natural gifts that suit different styles of football. Sam-style requires a lot more strength and physical power than tiki-taka for example, and a player without those attributes will be wasted in that setup.

i agree. I do subscibe to the school of thought that the cream always rises to the top though. the cream having both amazing ability and mental strength.

How much footage have you seen of Matthews and Puskas?

If we're doing top 10s of what I've seen (attacking players wise since about 2002):

Messi
Zidane
Cristiano Ronaldo
Ronaldo 9
Ronaldinho
Kaka
Drogba
Henry
Errrm Bale maybe

Good call

But I would add to that list

George Best
Cantona
Tom Finney

Jesus Christ

He was very good but mentioned amongst the greatest ? no chance, not for me.

He isn't even the best Utd player of the last 20 years, let alone one of the greatest ever players. Stop it ! Infact he isn't even in the top 3 best Utd players of the last 20 years
