Interesting video analysis of Everton's defence

Pretty good article really. Been banging on for ages that the reason we're conceding so many is because the full backs have no protection. In the Moyes days, we'd have Jack Rodwell and Phil Neville shoehorned into wide midfield positions. It made for turgid viewing at times, but at least we never gave away cheap goals from crosses.

Obviously, having a goalkeeper that doesn't [Poor language removed] himself when the ball comes anywhere near the six yard box would help too, but we're not doing enough to stop the crosses in the first place. Probably because - like Stoke's third goal last week - Kone, Deulofeu and Barkley all end up on the same position at times. Should never ever happen when we don't have possession and it's totally Martinez's fault.

But given the choice of grinding out a scrappy 1-0 victory at home with five defenders playing in midfield, or watching us play some of the best football in the league (honestly, how good is it to watch Lukaku, Barkley, Stones and Deulofeu play for Everton) yet continually shooting ourselves in the foot at the back, I know which I'd pick. Much more entertaining but even more frustrating.

4-3-3 for me. The person in that article was talking about the left hand side and Galloway getting exposed. 3 of Stoke's goal came from the right hand side. And the other one was a fluke. I don't think he watched the game in all honesty.

Yeah you don't want your wide players offering cover but worrying their defence you need to have more protection in the middle. 4-3-3 seems perfect for us and what he wants to do, especially with McCarthy out and a clear trust issue with Besic.

It's crazy, insane, poor football. A style which is totally incongruous with the resolute defending that is required if you want to perform well in the Premier League. The system needs to dropped. It is not the case that this style only needs a bit of tweaking to bring results, or that it is only 10% of a problem that can be solved with the supposedly 'easy' implementation of adequate defending. The system is incongruous with adequate defending, and not being able to defend represents far more than 10% of a problem.

We've been doing 4-3-3 for a while now, Rom, Kone and Geri as a front 3.

Barkley, Barry and McCarthy/Cleverly as a midfield 3.

He played it against Chelsea and it looked fine with Besic on the left bombing on and getting back. A smart tactic actually seeing that Ivanovic was having a mare. When Naismith came on he too got back and played in that role - allowing him space to drift inside and score.

Well someone needs to explain it better to Barkley, Cleverley and Barry I'd say mate.

We're not far off being very good but individuals seem to be switching off at different times and then we're over exposed, then as ever the keeper takes the blame.
