Do you sleep well @RAFUH huh.. Do ya ??

One day

One bloody day xxxxx

Not really. Sometimes it's falling asleep, others it's staying asleep. It was much, much worse before I implemented a nightly routine and had better habits.

I'm not saying sleep hygiene is the answer for all, but non drug therapy is almost always a better option and certainly should be tried.

I find melatonin to be fairly effective, at least in falling asleep. I tend to only get a few hours this way (4-5 max), although I don't wake up groggy because the melatonin seems to help you wake naturally at the end of a sleep cycle rather than in the middle of one (perversely, less sleep is often better).

Three basic things that you can do: ensure your bedroom/sleeping area is only for that purpose, not somewhere you spend other parts of your day; avoid computers and television for at least an hour before sleeping, if not longer; meditate for 5-10 minutes before going to bed. The latter of these might not sound convincing, especially if you generally have a busy life, but the benefits of sitting quietly and focussing on nothing other than your breathing are huge and varied. Try out these three things for a week and you'll see some benefits.

This site helped me. Also long lists, I usually go for football. Try and think of every goalie Everton have had since the war, then left backs, right backs etc. You tend to find you only get to the goalie.

Mindfulness helps also. Try mindful breathing. Google mindfulness and that will help, as it keeps you in the present and not woorying about other stuff such as sleeping, or your problems.

As ridiculous as this sounds I had insomnia a while back and was told by a 'sleep therapist' (excuse to get out of English) in school to pretend I was asleep. Honest to God it worked. She told me to just lie there and close my eyes and breathe as if I was asleep. Even lob in the occasional snore.

Try that. Seriously. It probably won't work and sounds stupid but it's worth a go.

Echo the thoughts about your mum's cancer possibly being the cause too. Hope things work out for you.

I actually have to do that quite often just to fall asleep, but I've not had quality sleep in forever...

ZMA is supposed to help with sleep. It's made of Zinc monomethionine and aspartate, Magnesium aspartate and Vitamin B6.

Do you do any excercise? If not give it a go, I find it more difficult to sleep when I haven't tired myself out in the gym.

But like others have said, finding the root cause is the most important fix.

I think a poor diet can also disrupt sleep although i believe energy drinks are the worst, i sometimes play 5 a side late at night and drink lucozade and such, i can then come home get a shower and fall asleep instantly but if i wake up during the night i find myself watching late night tv for hours (its fricken crap too) i even know that jeremy kyle is in the USA.

Having a really hard time sleeping the past couple of months, i average maybe 1-2 hours sleep a night and some nights i don't sleep at all. every night i lie in bed in darkness for hours trying to sleep and nothing happens, i just lie there getting frustrated and stressed that i've got to spend another day at work being barely functional due to tiredness.

Im thinking about going to the doctor and getting prescribed some sleeping pills, i've tried the usual over the counter stuff but it doesn't work, even ordered melatonin from the states and again it did nothing. My worry is that everyone tells me to avoid prescribed sleeping pills as its very easy to become too reliant on them.

Anyone here got any experience ? If so what pills did you get prescribed and how easy was it to get off them and get back to sleeping normally without the aid of them ? I need to get this problem sorted, its gonna be the death of me otherwise, i look and feel like christen bale in the machinist at the moment.

I,d also have a go at wearing a sleep mask - get a decent one, the cheap ones are a waste of time. Once you eventually do drop off the mask helps fool your brain into thinking its pitch black outside and keeps you asleep longer. I,ve also used this stuff and found it to be quite good at helping me to get off to sleep - VALERIAN ROOT tablets. It's a natural sedative and works similar to prescription meds, but without the side effects. Dead cheap and it's sold widely on the internet. Hopefully with all the different info that's been provided you,ll be able to use some of it to help.
