Injury Updates

With the likes of Baines and Cleverley coming back in we're going to have strength in depth again. All we need now is an injury for Osman and we'll be looking really good.

We do have on the face of it our best squad for years, as you say about Osman (I agree) but would also add please keep Peanuts and Hibbo out of the way. It is now down to RM to sort out the best first 11 depending on the game and the bench plus tactics and strategy.

Against West ham I would like to see him start with the team we had against S/land bot obviously Galloway for Oveido.

Roberto Martinez expects to be without Bryan Oviedo for a period of "two to three weeks".

The Everton boss also confirmed Leighton Baines, Muhamed Besic and Tom Cleverley are all closing in on their own respective comebacks, with Tony Hibbert and Steven Pienaar also eyeing full fitness in November.

With regards to Baines, Martinez disclosed he plans to field the left-back in a behind-closed-doors friendly during the international break in a bid to boost the England man's sharpness following ankle surgery.

Costa Rican Oviedo was withdrawn against Sunderland with a hamstring complaint last Sunday and had a scan on Tuesday afternoon. And, updating on the situation at his press conference on Thursday morning, Martinez revealed the 25-year-old could return later this month.

"Leighton Baines, Mo Besic and Tom Cleverley have been training with normality with the first-team squad," said the Toffees chief. "That’s a real positive boost. It’s making sure we measure that well and don’t rush them back into action. "With those three we’ll get a bit more information over the next few days. I don’t think Leighton will be available for the weekend - it’s a case of managing his match fitness more than anything else. Medically, he’s in a great condition.

"Bryan Oviedo picked up a hamstring problem that may keep him out of action for two to three weeks, but it’s nothing too serious. We hope that he can come back for the Aston Villa game. If not, the Bournemouth game.

"Steven Pienaar is working well as well but is not available for the weekend. Hibbo has had an injection just to take some pain away, but in the last three weeks he has been working with the first team, so I would expect him to be available after the international break."

Since Oviedo's broken leg, he's suffered 2 hamstring injuries, a knee injury, and a broken foot. I'm not a doctor, but I wonder if he's still suffering the effects of his leg break which is leading to other injuries due to compensating while playing with pain.

Roberto Martinez hopes to welcome Tom Cleverley back to the fold for the visit of Aston Villa on Saturday. The midfielder has been missing since limping off against Tottenham Hotspur back at the end of August. But Martinez is optimistic that the 26-year-old could return against his former club at Goodison. “Tom is fully fit now,” he told evertontv. “He had a little bit of a cold over the weekend that stopped him from training but he is back now and it is about making sure he gets in enough work in order to be considered 100 per cent. “He is not far away from being available for the squad.”

There is further good news concerning Leighton Baines. The left-back came through a friendly against Preston, scoring one and assisting another in a 4-3 win, and Martinez is confident the 30-year-old's own return to the first team is not too far away. “The break has been exactly what Leighton needed,” said the Blues boss. “He has been able to have contact with the football and develop that match fitness that he needs. “We need to be cautious because it was a re-injury, and he has been sidelined for a long period of time. We will give him as much time as we can but we are in a positive period. A lot of good work has been put in, he had the behind-closed-doors game and every day in training is another step towards getting him back to full fitness and being available. “I think it is too early to tell when that moment will be when he can be reintroduced back into the team but certainly every day is a step towards that.”

Martinez also revealed that both Tyias Browning and Brendan Galloway could miss the Villa game with minor knocks. The pair sat out England Under-21 duty and the Toffees chief admitted their withdrawal was a precautionary measure. “Tyias and Brendan picked up knocks and they are things we are going to assess," he added. "They weren’t in 100 per cent condition when they joined up with the Under-21s, and we have a very good relationship with England. “It was important that we could look after the players, rather than risking potential problems. “They have been working on individual programmes for the last two or three days but it is too early to tell if they are going to be available or not.”

Typical Everton huh - have 4 players who can play LB Baines/Oviedo/Garbutt/Galloway and we might have to start an academy lad!

Tbh think Baines will start and do 45/60 mins with Barry moving to LB to replace him with either Gibson or Besic coming into midfield as a sub.

Good job I have faith in our academy players, too haha. Yeh possibly or Galloway might end up fit enough to start the game at least. Or stick Lennon there like his amazing debut at right-back...

Yep never expected to see Lennon as a RB, sure as hell hope not to see him as a LB!

Really like Connolly, seems to enjoy running into the opposing box ala Coleman. We have a good track record with fullbacks.

Every week at the start of Roberto's press conference I fall for his positivity...nice one, Baines Cleverly & Pienaar are all back!.....then minutes later it's like, oh they might be back....then a minute later it's like, they're still weeks away aren't they?! :(
