I remember the fair play placement was very murky in those pre-Internet-stat days.

You only heard about it at the end of the season, out of the blue. I guess we just didn’t get the announcement, or we knew no English club was getting it long before the end of the season.

Even if they did I am sure there is another workaround somewhere. They just need to knock these rules on the head though not before dealing with the historical cases first.
