If you could go back to change a result....

Yes. 85-86, a win would have given us the title by a point. It was the game Lineker's 'lucky boots' didn't get packed by the kit man

Nor his lucky head, whereas Tommy Caton had his on, clearing one of the line with the back of his head while looking at the Everton fans through the net. Lineker just had to put his header anywhere but where it went.

RS in the FA Cup semi final 1977
Oxford Utd away 85/86
RS in the FA Cup semi final 11/12
Villareal away 04/05
Dynamo Kyiv away 14/15

All for obvious reasons.

On a more personal level, the 4-0 away defeat at Arsenal, second last game of the 97/98 season, so I wouldn't have had to spend the week from hell feeling sick to the pit of my stomach with nerves ahead of the last game decider vs. Coventry.

Oxford - would have been great to perhaps win the league 3 in a row even if we still lose on GD apparently.

No, we finished 2 points behind Liverpool that season. If Oxford hadn't scored the last-minute winner and it finished 0-0, we'd still have finished 1 point behind. If we won instead, we'd have won the league by a point.

Sorry, I was labouring under the impression we drew 0-0! Either way it felt like a defeat.

I agree all 5 matches were soul destroying losses at the time. But with hindsight, what would be the benefit of us winning some of them anyway? Obviously, the Villarreal one meant we'd have got into the CL groups and got loads of cash, and the 09 FA Cup final would have given us a trophy, but the other 3 may have been meaningless anyway.

Kiev away would only put us in the QF with another 4 matches before you even play in the final. I totally lost interest as soon as we got knocked out, so not even sure who we'd have played in the QF. Would we have even for to the semi?

Wigan QF - if I remember rightly we'd have been drawn against Chelsea in the semi. No guarantee of even making the final, let alone winning it.

Liverpool SF - we'd have played Chelsea in the final so not an easy game at all.
I honestly thought we could go far if we beat Kiev. I'm can't remember getting Chelsea if we beat Wigan, I'm sure the biggest team left was Man City. And the Liverpool SF actually killed me a bit. Worst game of my life

In 85-86, two defeats cost us the double. Win both of them, we'd have won the double instead.

A simplistic way of looking at it, but if only one league result could be changed in that whole season, I'd change the Goodison derby not the Oxford game. Yes, it was in September, so very early in the season, whereas people focus on the Oxford one as it was in the title run-in. But we'd have won the league if we'd have beaten either team instead of losing.

If we win the Goodison derby, they end up with 3 points less and we have 3 points more, meaning we win the league by 4 points. The second game to cost us the double is obviously the cup final.

Two defeats against Liverpool that lost us the double instead of winning it. Small margins.

Wigan played Millwall in the semi, and Chelsea played City.

Can anyone else confirm if we would have drawn Chelsea in the semi in 2013, if we'd have beaten Wigan in the QF?

I didn't watch it, but I seem to recall the balls for the semi draw being in alphabetical order. If that's true, 1- Chelsea 2- Man C 3- Millwall 4- Wigan.

1 and 2 were drawn together, and 3 drew 4.

If we'd have beaten Wigan in the QF, that would have changed the draw. Alphabetically, we'd have been ball 2 and come out of the hat against Chelsea.

Considering you didn't watch it, it's amazing how you can recall all that information ;)

I've moved on from the distant past but in the last two seasons it would be the Sunderland result which saw Osman make a mistake and Howard being sent off and then us batter them with 10 men for 80mins.

Had we won that game we might have been top by the turn. Gerry getting injured a couple of weeks before didn't help either.

Since then it's been all downhill and yes I know we went 7 games unbeaten but we grinded out a lot of those results. Before January of Martinez' first season we looked a team that could challenge anyone. It sort of all fell apart after that.

This is what Gus Poyet said that day:

"Even with 10 men they [Everton] were the best team we have played against."

That's on Boxing Day when pretty much everyone has played everyone.

Hopefully a few good seasons and the right start and we can get back to those highs. I still believe we have the players.

Possibly so, but it isn't necessarily alphabetical all the way from Round 3 to the semi draw. If the game against Wigan had gone to a replay it might have been "Everton or Wigan" but it could have been "Wigan or Everton".
